Vicki Leibeck-Owsley's friend calls for support

Just over a year after Adair County High School English teacher and Academic Team Coach Vicki Leibeck-Owsley represented Adair County High School on Jeopardy! she is battling for her life against pancreatic cancer.

Her family, friends and coworkers are battling alongside her, finding ways to help as they pray for her healing. Vicki's friend Kathryn Gray Tabb took to social media and posted the requests below, letting everyone know specific ways they may help. She also started a GoFundMe page, the link is below, to help raise funds to take care of what insurance will not.

Kathryn writes, "Hey there! While I would love to spend my time and space posting about a life WELL lived that deserves all the celebration in the world, sadly, we live in a country where trying to survive cancer is really expensive, and the noble profession of teaching doesn't pay well enough to prevent it from being crippling debt.

Vehicle Registration Grace Period ending soon

By Lisa Greer, Adair County Clerk

According to data released by the Kentucky Division of Motor Vehicle Licensing numerous vehicle registrations in Adair County remain unpaid beyond their original expiration date. And time is running out for those vehicle owners to pay their registration and taxes without incurring a penalty.

Earlier this year, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet granted a grace period for vehicle and vessel registrations and disable parking placards administered by county clerks or the Cabinet. That window, which was created to ease the burden on those adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, will continue with no penalties through the close of business on October 6.

However, beginning October 7, any unpaid registration or placard due at the end of September or earlier will be considered past due and Kentucky Division of Motor Vehicle Licensing will issue penalties for the entire overdue period. That means registrations due at the end of March will have seven months of penalties tacked onto the original bill.

Registrations can be renewed in Adair County Clerk Lisa Greer's office, Monday-Friday 8amCT to 4pmCT and Saturdays 8amCT to NoonCT.

When renewing your registration, be sure to bring:

Sept. 20-26 is Farm Safety and Health Week in Kentucky

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles has proclaimed Sept. 20-26 as Farm Safety and Health Week in Kentucky to encourage farmers and farm workers to put safety first at all times. The theme for this year's safety week is "Every Farmer Counts."

"Farmers face a variety of risks in the course of their work, from machinery accidents, chemical exposure, unruly livestock, grain bin entrapment, severe weather, and many others," Commissioner Quarles said. "In Kentucky, we have made great strides to mitigate these risks to make farming safer than ever before. But one farm fatality is one too many. Every farmer counts. When we lose a farmer, it's not just the farmer who is affected - family members, employees, and business partners all suffer. Whether you are on the farm, on the road, or in the home, please take that extra step to protect yourself and those around you."

The Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center reported that 12 Kentuckians engaged in agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting died on the job in 2019, compared with 14 in 2018 and 50 in 1995.

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) operates a Farm & Home Safety Program that provides educational resources and training to ensure the safety of farmers and their families.

Governor's Tuesday update: Positivity rate below 4%

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Tuesday updated Kentuckians on the state's continuing efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

"I will start by telling you one of the most exciting things about our COVID report is that today we are now under a 4% positivity rating," the Governor said. "That is moving in the right direction at a time when we are giving guidance, especially to school systems, about how to at least get back to a hybrid model starting on Sept. 28."

As of 4 p.m. Sept. 15, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 58,000 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 745 of which were newly reported Tuesday. Ninety-five of the newly reported cases were from children ages 18 and younger, of which 15 were children ages 5 and under. The youngest was only 27 days old.

"While those are more cases than we would like to see based on significant tests and testing that we are continuing on our day-to-day basis, our positivity rate is now under 4% again, just barely," the Governor said.

Adair Food Pantry Serves 300 Families

By George Kolbenschlag

Adair Countians are generous folks and our local food pantries and those they serve benefit from that generosity.

The largest of Adair’s food pantries began as a project of the Columbia Christian Church “Fifteen or twenty years ago years ago” according to present pantry treasurer, Robert Flowers. The late Ivy Collins French organized the pantry and the Christian Church hosted it from the church basement. It rapidly outgrew that location and was relocated to it its present home in a separate building at Columbia United Methodist Church.

That pantry is the largest, but not the only local food pantry. Several other charitable organizations, including Trinity United Methodist church and Joy Ministries also provide food to local residents.
