History Monday: Trip down Crocus and up Sand Lick from 1915

Dr. J.T. Jones takes a trip down Crocus and up Sand Lick, visiting and pondering...

By Mike Watson

The following is an extract taken from a lengthy letter to the Adair County News from Dr. J.T. Jones, dentist, who had been on a sojourn in 1915. Dr. Jones resided for some years at Montpelier and later near Columbia. He was best known for his professions and also for his stories and poetry printed in the pages of the News. In more recent times, he may be remembered as the grandfather of Miss Margaret Clayton, Mrs. Marian Clayton Vance, and others. (Adair County News, 17 May 1916)
"...It has been well said that man made the town and God made the country, and He certainly displayed most artistic handiwork when he made Crocus Creek and its tributaries. Here we were again impressed with the shortness of our fleeting span of life for there from the mouth of Burns' Creek I viewed three fertile farms upon which I had made teeth for the wives of Joe Turner, Woodie Petty, Larkin Strange, and two others, ladies, and all but one long since dead.

"Nestling among verdant hills and productive valleys is a modern church by the wayside where the old log house, Republican, stood in which away back, many years ago, I use[d] to hear Isaac T. Remean, Andrew P. Davis, Caleb Sewell, William Simpson expound the ancient Gospel in its primitive purity and simplicity, who, being men of faith, have long since entered their reward.

Trabue Share, Swap, Adopt a Plant, Sat 19 Sept 2020

By Mary Anne Loy

Fall is the ideal time to divide perennial plants that have become crowded, or relocate plants to other spots in the garden. The Trabue-Russell House Gardens will make their "extras" available on Saturday, September 19, 2020, beginning at 9amCT. It is also a chance for any who have too much of certain plants, to bring their extras along to swap.

Some of the varieties available from the T-R Gardens are Mexican Sunflower, and Mist Flower (wild ageratum), pictured above. These both like plenty of sun, but are not otherwise too demanding. Shade lovers include Solomon's Seal and Columbia. You may also like to get a start of Spice Bush, a shrub native to the eastern United States. Its fragrance justifies its name. Plants on the T-R Gardens wish list include peonies, poppies, and rose of Sharon.

Gardens have been started and sustained for generations on pass-along plants, so plan to share, swap, or adopt some of the local bounty on Saturday, September 19, 300 Jamestown Street, Columbia.

Linda--Does the KY Dept. of Tourism know about you? Your trip ideas, and the tips and secrets you put in with them, are the greatest. (I love the "Pay attention" in this one.) I always print them out, and sooner or later, we will do them all. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Migrant from the Ridge

By Phillip Coffey

Did today’s labor send me over the edge?
Am I having a Bob Dylan moment?
Been busy for a spell - using sling blade, cooking and washing and stuff
’Migrant From the Ridge

“Not today,” said the Pauper to the Prince
turning up turnips in the Autumn season
Taking the reins the Pauper relents
Then he laughs for no apparent reason

The Migrant from the ridge looks about
Finding all these “Shucks” in my seeds
So much chaff, worthlessness, ’no account
All our people bleeding, so many needs
I know you understand why I put Shucks in quotations.
Try to keep it G-rated.

Day trip south - from Columbia down Hwy 61

By Linda Waggener

When in the mood for a scenic drive, head south from the Columbia Public Square, the center of the universe, on Burkesville Street. Follow along through the Veterans Memorial bypass - very very carefully as this is a dangerous spot - on past Walmart on Highway 61 south to the county seat of Cumberland County in Burkesville.

In the old days, this was a curvy country road but thanks to Sen. David Williams in the recent past, the new Road is smooth and straight.

On this new road, you will bypass Sparksville, Kentucky old town and head on to greater Breeding Kentucky where you'd have had a chance to sit a spell and eat a home cooked meal before the Coronavirus shut things down there.
