State launches new website to support nonprofit organizations

By Susan Dunlap

Frankfort, KY -. (Aug. 13, 2020) - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear and Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) Cabinet Secretary Eric Friedlander announced many nonprofits now have free access to the state's new volunteer recruitment and management website, Volunteer Kentucky.

The new website, through Serve Kentucky, a CHFS agency, aims to provide efficient volunteer recruitment and management system, facilitating Kentuckians' search for, and response to service opportunities within their communities. The site will also help better track volunteerism in Kentucky.

"Kentuckians are generous people and are always stepping up to give back and help one another in a safe way during these unprecedented times," Gov. Beshear said. "Through this new platform, more of our nonprofits have the ability to recruit new volunteers to help support many worthy causes."

Lawmakers receive update on food insecurity, food banks

By Jordan Hensley, LRC

Frankfort, KY - In recent months, lawmakers have heard testimony from various organizations on the impacts the COVID-19 pandemic is having on child welfare, veterans and more.

Lawmakers on the Tobacco Settlement Agreement Fund Oversight Committee heard testimony today on COVID-19's effect on food insecurity and hunger in Kentucky and how state funding has helped meet the needs of hungry Kentuckians across the state.

"As people struggle still not earning as much, still not receiving the benefits they're used to receiving, ... we're quite concerned about the impact of the pandemic," said Tamara Sandberg, executive director of Feeding Kentucky.

As of July 21, over 270,000 Kentuckians did not have enough to eat, according to Sandberg's presentation. Sandberg said that number is expected to increase by 40 percent in the next 12 months.

Governor's Thursday update: 785 new cases

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Thursday updated Kentuckians on the state's continuing efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) in the commonwealth.

"Wearing a facial covering is absolutely critical to what we want to be able to do in the commonwealth moving forward," said Gov. Beshear. "Protect lives, protect people's health, protect the economy and ultimately get our kids back to in-person classes."

Case Information
As of 4 p.m. Aug. 13, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 37,686 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 785 of which were newly reported Thursday. Twenty-five of the newly reported cases were from children ages 5 and younger.

"We know that we have a lot of work to do to create the type of safe environments that we need to," said Gov. Beshear. "Wearing a facial covering is working. Other steps are working. But we need you to stick with it. We cannot make decisions that are going to cause a significant spread."

Unfortunately, Gov. Beshear reported six new deaths Thursday, raising the total to 796 Kentuckians lost to the virus.

The deaths reported Thursday include a 56-year-old man from Carter County; an 80-year-old woman from Fayette County; two women, ages 82 and 89, and a 92-year-old man from Jefferson County; and a 74-year-old man from Taylor County.

KSP seeking to fill 30 telecommunicator positions

By Sergeant Josh Lawson

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky State Police (KSP) is seeking to fill 30 full-time and part-time Telecommunicator positions at 14 various post locations across the Commonwealth.

KSP Spokesperson Sergeant Josh Lawson says the agency is experiencing an unprecedented level of Telecommunicator vacancies.

"It's concerning for us to face this kind of shortage in one of the more critical areas within our agency", said Lawson. "Through retirements and attrition the number of Telecommunicators has dropped significantly."

Lawson assures the staffing shortage has not impacted emergency service response times at post level. "We are fortunate to have dedicated personnel who have stepped up and did what is necessary to ensure that there is not a break in service for Kentuckians."

The Tagalong

By Phillip Coffey

I am totally a tagalong
Share nothing with me to complex.
Just listen to my rhyming song
While others falter willingly, all perplexed.

Keep it all simple for me.
Send only your abridged plans.
The tagalong knows 'whatever' will be.
The one following 'the footsteps' in the sand.

Update on Rep. Bam Carney

John Chowning sends this recent update from Mark Carney:

Bam continues to be in the same transitional room at Norton's that he was in last Tuesday. Positive signs are his oxygen has gotten some better over the last week, and we can understand him better now than we could last week.

A couple of setbacks have also taken place this week. On Sunday afternoon they put in a port for dialysis. They gave him his first dialysis treatment Sunday night and are scheduled to give him his second round of dialysis in the morning. Also his infection number (white blood count) has been in the low 20's all week. Infectious disease doctors are on the case and will be keeping us posted as to what may be the cause and best way to treat it.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 08/12/2020

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

Today has been challenging. The death reported was an 85-year-old female from Casey. Also, we have now experienced another nursing home outbreak, this time in Green County where 16 residents and/or staff are currently positive.

We are now hearing that some of the public schools will likely return by way of in-person instruction. I have consulted personally with several area Superintendents today. Our advice must agree with that of the Governor and the Kentucky Department of Public Health. That is, it would be best to wait. I have fielded some complaints today that we (the health department) had recently reviewed the schools' reopening plans and found them to be consistent with the guidance. It is true, all the schools put a lot of thought into their plans and those plans did align with the guidance that was in place at the moment the plans were reviewed. Today's guidance from the Governor and the Kentucky Department of Public Health, though, has evolved.

We look anxiously forward to the day a vaccine for COVID-19 is developed and we can transition from a containment to a vaccination plan. Until then, please help us slow the spread of COVID-19 by wearing your face covering, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing your hand hygiene, increasing your general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of your face.
