State Senator Max Wise tests positive for COVID-19

Frankfort, Ky. (July 13, 2020) - The following is a statement from Senator Max Wise regarding his positive COVID-19 test:

"This past Thursday, I began experiencing very mild symptoms that I thought might be consistent with COVID-19. Out of an abundance of caution, I contacted my local healthcare provider first thing Friday morning and was scheduled to be seen that afternoon. Two tests were given, and both tests yielded positive results. Since that test on Friday afternoon, I have felt fine and I am no longer experiencing any symptoms.

Governor's Monday update

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Monday updated Kentuckians on the state's continued efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

Gov. Beshear emphasized his priorities - protecting the health and safety of all Kentuckians, restarting our economy and opening our schools - and said wearing a mask is the most important step we all can take to achieve those goals.

"So, what do we have to do? What are the actions that we have to take to protect our economy, to make sure that we protect $10 billion of our economy? It's pretty simple. Wear a facial covering," said Gov. Beshear. "Facial coverings help us achieve our three goals. No. 1 goal is to protect the lives and the health of Kentuckians. It is now a scientific fact: Wearing a mask protects both you and other people."

He noted that cases are surging across the nation, causing many states to roll back their efforts to reopen their economies.

"The second goal is restarting our economy," Gov. Beshear said. "There are multiple states now rolling back their reopening. I don't want that to be us."

Robert Stone - I am: a sonnet of hopeful change

Poetry by Robert Stone: I am: a sonnet of hopeful change

When I am dead and buried you at last
will never need to worry what words more
I might dig up from our unhappy past
that you would choose with patience to ignore.

But I am still alive and spouting words
collected through my years of reading much
about the swimming fish and flying birds
and all the things I did not fear to touch.

If I am honest I acknowledge choice
to set aside all unkind thoughts and acts
and do those things that will make you rejoice
when best of me is guided by sound facts.

Yet I am shaking in my shoes afraid
of failing to achieve a passing grade.

- Robert Stone, 12 July 2020

History Monday: Mad Dogs Always a Concern

By Mike Watson

Growing up in rural Adair County afforded many exciting moments. There were instances of heavy rains and high water, snakes on the porch, falling tree limbs, skunks, bee swarms, and so much more, including the occasional strange dog in the neighborhood. An unusual canine always created murmurs of possible rabies and the animal would have to be checked on, and due process, if necessary, carried out. Mad dogs have always been of concern, for they may bite anything or anyone, as the following story from the The Courier-Journal of 19 March 1874 illustrates:

Man's Faithful Friend -- Fido in the Country -- A Lively Demand for Madstones -- Campbellsville, Ky., Letter, March 16, in the Lebanon Standard -- Rabid dogs seem to be abundant this season. We have had them here, and hear of them in several other localities. One in Green County has bitten many dogs and a number of cattle. Two or three persons have been bitten, among them William Clark, aged about 16, son of Thomas J. Clark, proprietor of the hotel at Greensburg.

Letter: About the Bear Killed by Vaughn

Roger Smith writes:
Although I do not question the honesty and abilities of my dear friend Ed's reporting of the actions of the bear board, I do, in all honesty, feel that I should clear up one credential of a Bear Board member.

Since this individual has been one of my long time close friends and we have shared both woods and waters together, I know that he would not like to have an incorrect fact published about his hunting abilities, I offer the following correction.

Back in the day, the word was that Mr. Vaughn did not actually shoot the bear, but the bear saw him sitting up in a tree and passed away from heart failure due to uncontrollable laughter!

Please accept my account as quoted by one of his fellow Bear Board members.

Sincerely submitted by his long time friend.
