Adcock reappointed to Kentucky Board of Social Work

By Ariel C. Emberton

Campbellsville, KY - Dr. Anne Adcock, associate professor of social work and Bachelor of Social Work program director at Campbellsville University's Carver School of Social Work, was recently reappointed to the Kentucky Board of Social Work by Gov. Andy Beshear for a second consecutive term.

Adcock's four-year term began June 21 and will end June 21, 2024.

In order to serve in a position such as this, an application process has to be completed with the Kentucky Commission on Boards and Elections. "The commission makes recommendations to the governor and the governor approves those recommendations," Adcock said.

When Adcock first served in 2008, she said she was recommended by an acquaintance who was serving at that point. "I felt it would be a good way to serve both the public and my profession. I also saw it as a great learning opportunity, and it has definitely been all of those things," Adcock said.

Governor: Rising COVID cases are cause for concern

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Wednesday updated Kentuckians on the state's continued efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

"I hope you had a good Fourth of July weekend, but I hope it was safe, and it's important that it was safe, because while we have been at a plateau in Kentucky, really for several weeks, over the last four to six days we are seeing larger numbers," said Gov. Beshear.

As of 4 p.m. July 8, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 17,919 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 402 of which were newly reported Wednesday.

"The rising case numbers are cause for concern, so tomorrow we're going to announce some new requirements that are going to be mandatory," said Gov. Beshear. "Given what we are seeing across the country with exploding numbers in certain places, my commitment is to make sure that doesn't happen here, but I can't do it alone."

New Kentucky laws go into effect next week

By Robert Weber, LRC

Frankfort, KY - Most new laws approved during this year's regular session of the Kentucky General Assembly will go into effect on Wednesday, July 15.

That means voters will be asked to show a photo ID at the polls, veterinarians will be allowed to make a report to authorities if they find an animal under their care has been abused, and holders of state-issued ID cards will be added to the list of potential jurors.

While COVID-19 concerns caused lawmakers to gavel into session for only 53 of the 60 days allowed under the Kentucky Constitution, 285 Senate bills and 647 House bills were introduced for a total of 932. Of those, 49 Senate bills and 75 House bills became law for a total of 124. That's in addition to 462 resolutions that were introduced in both chambers, four of which carry the weight of law. That means 13.3 percent of all bills introduced became law.

The Kentucky Constitution specifies that new laws take effect 90 days after the adjournment of the legislature, which was April 15, unless they have special effective dates, are general appropriation measures, or include emergency clauses that make them effective immediately upon becoming law.

While some major measures have already taken effect -- such as the state budget and COVID-19 relief -- the majority of bills don't go on the books until July 15. They include measures on the following topics:

McConnell visits T.J. Regional Health

By Stacey Biggs

Glasgow, KY - U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell hosted a news conference at the T.J. Health Pavilion in Glasgow on Tuesday, July 7. Flanked by Neil Thornbury, CEO of T.J. Regional Health, and Dr. Eric Fisher, Chief Quality Officer, Senator McConnell expressed his gratitude for Kentucky's frontline healthcare workers and he discussed the impact of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act).

Additionally, he encouraged everyone to wear a mask to protect themselves and others. "Until we have a vaccine, it is incumbent on all of us to wear a mask and to protect one another," Senator McConnell stated. "Wearing a mask is easy; certainly easier than being on a ventilator."

Stones at Trabue Russell House used to form a garden

By Vonnie Kolbenschlag

The large stones surrounding a flower garden at the Trabue-Russell house have had an important role in early Columbia history. Once as part of a "springhouse" they protected a gushing spring that furnished water to animals, travelers and early settlers.

The "Public Spring" was a very valuable resource for a new town. Even before Columbia existed, there is evidence that animals gathered around the spring and the salt licks near-by - remnants from the inland sea that once covered the area known as Kentucky.

Reopening Adair County Schools 2020-2021

The Adair County School System has announced a very basic outline of what will be the start of the Adair County school re-opening plan for the 2020-2021 school year. More information will be coming soon.

From the office of Dr. Pamela A. Stephens, Superintendent

The Kentucky Department of Health, in collaboration with the Kentucky Department of Education and CDC, has issued guidance for schools on how to safely reopen for the upcoming school year amid the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic. The complete document can be accessed from the Kentucky Department on Education website.

As Adair County Schools plan for the return to school for the 2020-2021 school year, we need input from our parents/guardians to help in our decision making. We realize circumstances may change between now and our first student day schdeduled for August 24, 2020; however, information we get from you will help us as we continue to refine our plan.

In summation, the main points of the guidelines are as follows:
  • Student must wear a mask on buses.
  • Students and staff (including all substitutes, student teachers, etc.) must have a temperature check daily.
  • Students should adhere to the social distancing rules as much as possible.
  • Students (1st grade and above) must wear a mask when moving through the building or when unable to adhere to social distancing.
  • Considerations regarding masks will be made for students and staff with medical waivers
  • Cloth masks are preferred so that they may be laundered and machine dried.
All decisions regarding the reopening of Adair County Schools will be made in conjunction with local public health officials. While face-to-face instruction is the preferred delivery method, we realize that some families might prefer a different option for the 20-21 school year.
