LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 6/29/2020

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

Deaths: We are pleased to report no new deaths today. We have experienced a total of 27 deaths resulting in a 7.4% mortality rate among known cases.

New Cases: We report that our total case count has increased by 6 today: Adair: 2; Pulaski: 1; Russell: 1; Taylor: 1; and, Wayne: 1. The new cases include:
  • Adair: A 24-year-old female who is self-isolated, still symptomatic
  • Adair: A 55-year-old female who is self-isolated, still symptomatic
  • Pulaski: A 19-year-old male who is self-isolated, still symptomatic
  • Russell: A 68-year-old female who is self-isolated, still symptomatic
  • Taylor: A 36-year-old female who is self-isolated, still symptomatic
  • Wayne: A 61-year-old female who is self-isolated, still symptomatic
On a positive note, we released more cases today than we added new cases. Also, it is encouraging there are no new hospitalizations or deaths. COVID-19 is still spreading freely through our communities, though. Our best chance for slowing the spread is for everyone to wear a mask when out in public, to avoid crowds, to social distance (stay 6-feet from others), to wash their hands with soap and water often and thoroughly, to stay home if they have a fever or are coughing, to increase sanitation, and to avoid touching their faces.

Governor's Monday update

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - As of 4 p.m. June 29, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 15,347 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 117 of which were newly reported Monday.

The Governor noted that one new case is from Robertson County, which means all 120 of Kentucky's counties now has logged at least one positive case of COVID-19.

"This confirms what we've been saying for weeks: This disease is everywhere and because of that we need all Kentuckians to practice social distancing and wear masks to keep each other safe," the Governor said. "While we might see fewer cases in some areas right now, we know cases can spike quickly if we're not careful."

Letter: Stop the Presses... Y'all Can't Be Doing That

By Cynthia Meyer

Well-meaning people live trap a nuisance animal only to relocate the problem to someone else's front door. And I don't believe relocating critters is legal even to a State Park or lake area.

Even though they may be wreaking havoc for awhile, either get rid of the problem before birthing season or wait till after the kits are weaned. Especially, now when sow coons can have kits in the dens. Without a mother the youngsters will surely starve.

We need feedback from the local Game Warden on this situation as corn is starting to mature in the gardens and can be annihilated in one short night as well as cleaning out a hen house. And there will be more critters dropped off near farms than puppies and kittens.

Although we tend to blame the masked bandits and waddling Pogos (opossums) they are only trying to survive, and we must remember they must have a place to live also, so our best defense is to not leave midnight smackerels which entices them in if at all possible.

Where are the Butterflies?

By Joyce Coomer

Usually, this time of year, there are several butterflies flitting across the yard at any time of the day. Gizmo of the Golden Eyes has taken it upon herself to rid the yard of such nuisances but that doesn't account for the lack of butterflies elsewhere.

Our pasture should be a butterfly smorgasbord. Currently there is butterfly weed galore scattered across the pasture -- some in full bloom, some just starting to bloom. Add in bee balm, black-eyed Susans, sand briars, white, red and yellow clovers, a few lingering daisies, a bright yellow flower in the dandelion family, and Queen Anne's lace just starting to bloom, as well as flowers I haven't bothered to identify, and there should be butterflies everywhere I look.

Yesterday afternoon, besides the dozens of annoying flies, the only flying things I saw around any flowers were three bees -- not honeybees either. (I've not seen a honeybee on our place for at least ten years. With the amount of white clover in the front yard alone there should be dozens.) I haven't identified these bees.

History Monday: Adair County and the Whig Party, 1843

By Mike Watson

Now, I suppose we all have had enough politics to last for at least a week, maybe two. Perhaps a respite from the advertisements on television and the unsolicited phone calls. However, we historians like to look back at our ancestors and learn, when possible, what their political leaning was a century or more ago. Old newspapers are a wealth of information, often giving the mundane facts of life.

The Whig Party was on the rise in the early 1840s. Adair County had a strong party following as the following item from Kentucky Tribune, Danville, KY, of 3 November 1843, will bear out.

"Whig Meeting in Adair County--At a meeting of the Whigs of Adair County, held at the Courthouse on Monday, the 23rd of October, 1843, it being a day on which a called County Court was held, Col. William McNeely was called to the chair, and Isaac H. Caldwell appointed Secretary.

"After Parker C. Hardin, Esq. Had briefly explained the object of the meeting, the following resolutions were adopted:

Innovative treatment program reveals savings for members

Diabetes Value Program provides maintenance prescriptions and supplies for free or at reduced costs

By Russell Goodwin

Frankfort, KY - Lowering the price of diabetes treatment is helping control overall medical costs, according to a four-year review of Kentucky Employees' Health Plan (KEHP) data.

The latest data reveals that as members continue adherence to their diabetes treatment, the average medical trend for members with diabetes and members without diabetes are the same. In addition, ER visits and inpatient admissions were lower for diabetes patients than patients without diabetes during this same four-year period.

KEHP provides health insurance to almost 300,000 public employees, retirees and their families - roughly 6.6% of the state's overall population. Diabetes is one of the mostly costly medical conditions for the state's largest self-insured health plan, costing more than $3 million dollars a year.

Letter: Raccoons at my place too

Victoria Pike writes:
So far I've captured one with a can of tuna in a walk-in trap. No hurting him or her but has to move on. Cats are about to move. They are scared of it. Well got one. Then last night another smarter one showed up. Not falling for that. Also showing up was an opossum and ground hog. This isn't a zoo folks. Critters here are of the black Angus variety and 4 elderly kitties.

Relocation is a must so I will persevere until I rid the Pampered Angus Ranch of these destructive critters. Will send separate pictures. --Spread Boss Miss Victoria
