History Monday: Mrs. Etta Caldwell Remembered By Mike Watson Life as we knew it will probably never be the same. That happens from time to time, and has in our own lifetimes, if we think about it. So much changed after the 9-11 attacks; after the Vietnam Conflict; after Pearl Harbor. We all have our own way of looking at life and its progression. In fifty years--or less, perhaps--there will be an examination of this time, 2020, and what life was like, and how we remember events and people. This is the proverbial 'circle of life' that will come again and again. Mrs. Etta Caldwell was born in Kentucky in 1857. In 1951, at the golden age of ninety-four years, she was featured in a one-hour television program in Oklahoma City. Mrs. Caldwell related memories of her early married life in Adair County. She left here with family in 1906. Her husband, Robert T. Caldwell, had died and she migrated with her sons to New Mexico, as was a trend at that time, to homestead. Several years later she removed to Oklahoma and resided in Oklahoma City with a son in 1951. Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell were parents to Charles, of Oklahoma City; Mrs. Edna Robinson, of Oklahoma City; Rufus B., of Albuquerque, New Mexico; James A., of Cincinnati; and Rollin T., of Milltown, Adair County; and two sons who predeceased her. KSP: Keeping kids cool Frankfort, KY - During the first week of June, KSP is sending a plea to parents and caregivers with 'Keeping Kids Cool', a statewide initiative to provide awareness about leaving children in hot cars. It may seem like common sense, but statistics show that these deaths are continuing to happen across the U.S. According to the National Safety Council, 52 children died in 2019 of vehicular heatstroke and Kentucky accounted for two of those. One child in Texas has already died this year from being left in a hot car. Since 1998, there have been 850 child-related vehicular heatstroke deaths in the United States. These include instances where a child has been forgotten in a car, accidentally locks themselves in a vehicle or, in a small number of cases, when a child has been intentionally left in a car. KSP spokesman Sgt. Josh Lawson says the most common reason children are left in a hot car is the parent or caregiver forget they are there. A majority of parents are misinformed and like to believe they could never 'forget' about their child. "Temperatures inside a car can rise 19 degrees in 10 minutes," adds Lawson. "When you combine that with a warm weather day and the facts that a child's body heats up 3-5 times faster than adult, you have a recipe for disaster." Covid-19 Update: Cases on the rise again May 30, 2020 at 6:29:38pmCT - Cases are on the rise again and there's one new death, a 69-year-old male from Taylor County. Our [LCDHD] mortality rate is high when compared to world, national, and state numbers, at 11.6%. Amy Tomlinson, Lake Cumberland District Health Department After weeks of decline, positive COVID-19 cases are on the rise at the state and local levels. This is the result of two factors: 1) social distancing restrictions have been relaxed as the economy is reopened, and 2) a failure of a significant number of the public to avoid crowds or to wear masks. The daily growth rate for the world is ramping up and is now at 1.08 (meaning new cases double what they were nine days prior). This is a frightening growth rate and one we hope we don't see again in the U.S. or Kentucky. When new cases are doubling quicker than roughly fourteen days, this means that there are more new active cases being added than there are recovered cases being removed.
