Senator Max Wise's 2020 Regular Session Review Personal political commentary/opinions of the writer By State Senator Max Wise, (R-Campbellsville) 16th District: Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne Counties It was an honor to serve you and our district at the Capitol during the 2020 Regular Session. With a reduced staff and no visitors, efforts to promote social distancing left the Capitol much quieter than usual for the final days of a budget session. However, the legislature continued to work tirelessly to complete the people's business in a timely, but healthy manner, meeting only 53 legislative days--seven days less per the Kentucky Constitution. Going into this year's legislative session, we knew that its success would be measured on the passage of a balanced 2-year budget plan for the Commonwealth. Indeed, the worldwide pandemic prompted us to step back from tradition and make changes to session procedures while remaining dedicated to our constitutional obligations. Kentuckians encouraged to grow Victory Gardens By Sean Southard Frankfort, KY - Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles has announced a new Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) partnership with the University of Kentucky's (UK) Cooperative Extension Service and Kentucky's Nutrition Education Program (KYNEP) to encourage Kentuckians to get in touch with their agricultural roots during the coronavirus pandemic. "Since starting the Kentucky Hunger Initiative years ago, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture has kicked around the idea of a new agricultural education effort to encourage Kentuckians to grow their own victory gardens," said Commissioner Quarles. "Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, people have reached out to the KDA in droves seeking to learn how they can grow their own food. A partnership with the University of Kentucky is a natural fit for educating Kentucky families about how they can grow their own food. I hope Kentuckians - whether they be urban or rural - will get their hands dirty learning the basics about agriculture through a garden." The Kentucky Victory Garden effort comes during the coronavirus pandemic, a time in which Americans and Kentuckians of all stripes are coming together to not only support local agriculture but also have an increased interest in growing their own food while they are staying at home and practicing social distancing. UK's Cooperative Extension Service, which has offices in all of Kentucky's 120 counties, will distribute a Kentucky Victory Garden toolkit developed by KYNEP. LWC Swimming alumna Paige Hampton fights COVID-19 as medical worker By Christopher Coombs Lindsey Wilson student-athletes battle for victory on their surface of competition during their four years with Lindsey Wilson but where do they go after their final competition. Paige (Lewis) Hampton, a former member of the Lindsey Wilson women's swim team, has turned from competing in the pool to volunteering her time on the frontlines on the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Through all of the uncertainty, frontline medical professionals like Hampton have been a light providing hope to struggling communities. Hampton is currently in her third year of medical school at UPIKE Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (KYCOM), and has been asked by the state of Kentucky to volunteer her time to those in need in both Trigg and Lyon counties in Kentucky. "I wanted to join the COVID frontlines to help out my fellow healthcare professionals and their patients in their time of need," Hampton said. "Not only did this allow me the opportunity to help others, but it also allowed me to get experience on the frontlines of a pandemic that I hope will shape me into a better physician. " She has spent most of her time working in crisis areas like nursing homes and non-congregate shelters for people who have tested positive and are unable to go home for one reason or another. Carol Perkins: Needing a vacation Previous Column: Catch and release By Carol Perkins Needing a vacation? Need a trip somewhere besides the grocery store and the bank? I'm in that frame of mind to "get out of town" but see no end in sight except for a possible road trip. That would mean sleeping in the car and eating sandwiches out of a cooler or going through fast food place. I am in stage "3 months" of grieving for my freedom and my self-imposed quarantine. However, I came up with a brilliant plan. We could rent a camper and hit the road. Sounded good to me. "Guy," I said from another room. "I have an idea. Let's rent a camper and go on a road trip. See the country from the highway." I named off places we could go that wouldn't require being with other people, standing in a hotel, or eating in a restaurant. "You don't know the first thing about camping!" he laughed. "I can see you now." Lindsey Wilson Swimming Signs Seven for 2020-21 Season By Christopher Coombs The Lindsey Wilson swim program has signed seven student-athletes for the 2020-21 season, head coach Alicia Kemnitz announced on Thursday. Savannah Schoeman, Juliana Villa and Allie Rutherford signed with the women's team as Jordan Hartig, Evan Conklin, Chase Hickman and Tyler Buffel signed with the men. "I am especially happy with how this recruiting class came together considering the various challenges that families are facing because of COVID-19," Kemnitz said. "Our incoming men are a diverse and strong group who will each add depth to our program. While the women's class is small it is equally as strong. These talented student-athletes are all amazing sprinters who will make our relays more competitive." "It is always an honor to be chosen as a student-athletes home for the next four years as I'm excited to challenge them to be their best in the classroom and the water," Kemnitz said.
