Letter: 1800s infant mortality?

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Hey Mike, I was just wondering if all the early infant and early childhood deaths recorded in your article was "normal" for the 1800's or was there a problem of some other nature with this family? --BJF

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, Gov. Andy Beshear provided updates on Kentucky's fight against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Governor provided updates on coronavirus testing throughout the commonwealth, staying Healthy at Work and a report regarding a 10-year-old child who is ill related to COVID-19.

"The green lights continue to sprout up and light up all over Kentucky. This is our true show of unity and compassion," the Governor said. "When I look out at night and see these lights, it shows that we are Team Kentucky and we will get through this together."

2020 Primary Election Information

By Lisa Greer
Adair County Clerk

Due to the pandemic, our Governor postponed Primary Election Day to June 23, 2020 (Executive Order 2020-296). With this Executive Order the Governor worked with our Secretary of State to create the order that changes the manner by which this election will be conducted. Using the Executive Order, the State Board of Elections created emergency regulations and procedures to follow. Hopefully, this style of election will drastically reduce any potential exposure to the COVID-19 virus for the voter and for election workers.

Reminder: this only applies to the June 23, 2020 Primary

The postponement, executive order, and regulations were all created so that this election can be safe, secure, and successful. Along with this decision the Adair County Board of Elections has developed a plan to facilitate in-person early voting for those that feel their liberties are being infringed upon. With this two-front approach to the election, we feel that every voter will have ample opportunity to practice their right to vote.

What to Expect:

Letter: Searching for information on Harmon Family

Note: We had Mr. Harmon's email address listed incorrectly when this article first appeared. The corrected contact email is below.

Edwin Louis Harmon
Hello, I read an article tonight (Harmon-Burton Feud: It happened in the 1920s in Adair Co., KY) about Charles White (Toad) Harmon and ongoing feuds between the Harmon and Burton families in the early 1900s in and around Adair County, KY.

I would like to connect to related Harmons and exchange family information. My father was William Eugene Harmon, his Father was Louis Harmon, and beyond that I am at a loss for exact information. The article published seems to indicate that Charles (Toad) Harmon is a Great Grandfather.

At any rate, I would like to request family information in your publication. Can you guide me further? Thank You, --Ed Harmon, Amco63@currently.com

Ed, thanks for writing. Hopefully some of our readeres can contact you directly with more information. --Pen

History Monday: John Field, Early Settler, Merchant

By Mike Watson

John Field is my ancestor, and the ancestor of many who still reside in Adair County. Here is a brief sketch from An Adair County Kentucky History, Volume 2.

John Field, Jr. was a son of John Field, Sr. and Sarah White. The elder Field died early in 1778 in Bedford County, VA, a young man, and left a will. He left a wife and two very young sons, John and Thomas. John was born in September 1777 in Bedford County; the birth date, place and later whereabouts of Thomas are unknown, but it is theorized that he died as a child, for no mention is ever found of him after the reference in the father's will. John Field, Jr. came to Adair County as a youth of barely sixteen years with his step-father, William Hurt, Sr.

John Field married Martisha Stapp, daughter of Joshua Stapp, Jr., in Green County 29 July 1801. He was an early merchant in Columbia, owned a vast amount of land in Adair and elsewhere, was the first county jailer, the first Columbia postmaster, and traveled widely. He went nearly bankrupt in the 1820s as a result of careless business practices that overwhelmed him after the Panic of 1819 reached Kentucky. He died in Adair, near Glensfork where he had lived after leaving Columbia in the 1820s, on 15 December 1857, and is buried, along with his wife, in the John Powell cemetery with no markers. This cemetery was the final resting place because his son, William B. Field, was the husband of Sarah Powell, daughter of John Powell, for whom the cemetery was named.

John and Martisha's children were:
