CPD: Trafficking Arrest By Officer Adam Cravens On Saturday night, July 13, 2019, officers with the Columbia Police Department responded to a report of a male subject unresponsive behind the wheel of a red Chevrolet at Dollar General on South Highway 55. Upon arrival subject was awakened and briefly checked out by Adair EMS on scene. On site investigation lead to discovery of digital scales, an undisclosed amount of marijuana, a number of pills located on subjects person and a large amount of cash. February 28, 1978 Around Adair with Ed Waggener The article below first appeared in the February 28, 1978, Adair County News. It's a winter article about a summer topic--tomatoes. Dad always loved the idea of citizen-industry and work-as-exercise, and devoted many paragraphs to the benefits of both. There's also an argument for another of his favorite causes--more and better sidewalks--at the end. --Pen By Ed Waggener What a switch: Coming here to pick tomatoes! When we were growing up, one of the jobs we knew we could get was to go to Indiana and pick tomatoes. If the grand experiment of County Agent Wayne Livesay, Tri-County Pepper Receiving Station Manager A.L. Sinclair, and Cumberland Farm Co-op Manager Larry Snell is successful, people can be picking tomatoes right in Adair County. A tomato meeting is scheduled tonight (Tuesday) in the County Agent's Office at 7:00 p.m. Dr. C.R. Roberts of UK will also be on hand. Livesay and Sinclair say that Adair County growers could realize as much as $2,000 per acre for the three month crop. Think small is key Both Sinclair and Livesay advise Adair Countians to think small in the tomato business. They say that people who raise a quarter acre to no more than one acre have the best chance of success. Columbia Fire Department responds to vehicle fire By Donald Hare The Columbia Fire Department responded to the Westbound Lane of the 46 MM Louis B. Nunn Cumberland Parkway on Sunday Morning, July 14, 2019, at 9:57amCT. Upon arrival, firefighters found a semi tractor trailer engulfed in flames, Firefighters were able to get fire extinguished prior to the load catching on fire. The vehicle was owned by Branscums Storage, Inc., of Russell Springs, KY. Dr. Lafayette Page of Adair County A son of The Shire goes forth and does quite well. Upon his passing, the Adair County News said of Dr. Page that "No son of Adair county has ever led a more useful life or made a more illustrious name for themselves in their chosen profession." By JIM Ninety years ago today -- July 14, 1929 -- Adair native Dr. Lafayette Page died at his home near Indianapolis. Dr. Page, born in Columbia in 1863, was graduated from the Columbia Christian School and in the mid-1880s, started attending the Louisville Medical School. From there, he practiced in Indianapolis for a few years before going abroad the Munich, Germany, to study for the specialty in which he was interested, the ear, nose and throat. While in Germany, he met and fell in love with Miss Marion Heinly, a musically inclined young woman from Illinois. Lafayette and Marion were married in Geneva, Switzerland in the mid 1890s. Among Dr. Page's many accomplishments was organizing and generously donating to the [James Whitcomb] Riley Memorial Hospital for Crippled Children in Indianapolis.
