They'd hunted on the Jay and Ida Wheeler family farm in the Chance community of Adair County and had seen a black snake, a red one and a light brown one.

Letter: Fairplay Store and Creed Lacy

By Jamie Isabelle

Opening Columbia Magazine this morning has flooded my eye with so many memories. I wasn't old enough to remember when Mr. Rosenbaum owned the store. I do remember mom and dad talking about him. I came around after Amon Spoon took over.

Amon and I are cousins. So, when Mr. Watson talked about all the older ones that hung out at the store, Mackie Spoon was my grandpa. I remember going to the store and all the men would be sitting in the back. My dad, Junior Spoon, would go to the store and hang out too during the day and it was a treat getting off the bus in the afternoon and he would have gotten me a coke and a candy bar that day.

Bernheim Forest fighting proposed pipeline

By Kacie Goode, The Kentucky Standard

The Bernheim Forest nature and wildlife sanctuary is claiming threat to an endangered snail species and other wildlife in its opposition of a proposed natural gas pipeline that, if built, would cut directly through the Cedar Grove Wildlife Corridor.

In a letter provided to media outlets last week, Bernheim communications staff said the pipeline proposed by Louisville Gas & Electric would impact critical habitats for a number of plants and wildlife, including golden eagles, endangered bats and the endangered Bluff Vertigo snail, which researchers discovered in the area May 10.

Scott Co man sinks two holes-in-one in single round

By Kal Oakes, Georgetown News-Graphic

Alan Mullins didn't celebrate Tuesday's first hole-in-one at Scott County's Canewood Golf Course with much more than raised eyebrows, a smile, and high-fives to the other players in his quintet. Maybe two hours after knocking his drive straight into the cup at No. 2, a 9-iron from 139 yards, Mullins pulled a 6-iron from his bag at No. 14, another par-3 of 165 yards, and repeated the feat. Two holes-in-one. One round.

Campbellsville University Excellence in Teaching Ceremony

By Joan C. McKinney and Gracyne Hash

Campbellsville, KY -. - "Children still need teachers who care about them and believe in them ... create environments where they feel safe and happy. They still need teachers who are patient and work hard to help them learn and grow. It's as simple as that, not always easy, but always worth the effort. Always." - the late Suzanne Dennis, who was 64 at her death.

Laura Beth Hayes, the daughter of the late Suzanne Dennis, read this writing from her mother about teachers at Campbellsville University's 33rd annual Excellence in Teaching Award Program Ceremony May 11 in Ransdell Chapel.

Hayes, who has taught 16 years and is a former Excellence in Teaching Award recipient, spoke before 197 teachers who were honored from 68 school districts in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. A total of 3,946 teachers have been honored since the program began in 1987.

The Whitehurst Diaries: Whir, Whiz, Zoom!

As Sharon works to settle in to a new home, a spring cloudburst provides the background to an epic territorial battle on the back porch. Click on headline for complete story with photos.

By Sharon Whitehurst

When I first hung out the hummingbird feeders during a warm spell of late April weather I began to fear that none would find us at the new house.

A solitary male flew past the feeder one afternoon without stopping to drink and I saw no other hummers for nearly a month.

About two and a half weeks ago we became aware of a hummingbird presence--a male and sometimes a female circling the feeder and then darting off as though humans in their space were too intimidating.
