Letter: From lamp oil to jet fuel

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Thanks for sharing. I remember it well. As an aside, I can't help but pay my respects to the lowly 'lamp oil' which made the giant leap from the most mundane of titles to the present day, top of the heap, sexy and hot-sounding title of 'jet fuel!' --BFJ

Letter: Memories of the Fairplay Store

Terry Harvey writes:
This is the way I remember the Fairplay store growing up less than a mile away from our house. I always looked forward to going to the store with my Dad, Kendall or my grandfather, Finis Albert and sitting by the stove listening to all the tall tales of our neighbors.

My favorite lunch was an extra thick slice of liver cheese as only Stanley could cut. He could have been the originator of the quarter pounder.

The best days were when Stanley would allow my Aunt Elaine to take me fishing at his pond in the field to the right of the store. --Terry

Owner reconnects with dog after five years

By Becca Owsley, The News-Enterprise

When Janece Parsons woke up Tuesday morning she wasn't expecting the call she got a few hours later. After five years, Army, her Jack Russell Terrier, had been found. Army had been gone since April 13, 2014, with another Jack Russell Terrier named Leia.

From La Grange, Parsons' family was visiting friends in Upton when loud noises spook\0xADed the dogs and they ran away. Parsons searched the neighborhood and posted online hoping someone would find the dogs. But no one had seen them. Tuesday, after getting the call from Hardin County Animal Care and Control, Parsons said she just began crying and said, "You found my dog."

KY food safety regulations changing in July

Kentucky's amended code follows national standards designed by the federal Food and Drug Administration.

By Beth Fisher

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) is working to make the general public and business community aware of new changes to the state's food code which will improve safety and health standards for food storage, preparation and serving.

To prepare for upcoming changes, which will take effect in July, DPH conducted regional trainings for local health departments to educate food inspectors. Additionally, DPH has worked closely with businesses, organizations and associations, such as the Kentucky Restaurant Association, the Kentucky Retail Federation, Kentucky Association of Milk, Food and Environmental Sanitarians, and others to make sure industry officials and employees are prepared to implement changes.

Carol Perkins: Flowers make me happy

Previous Column: Life was more fun back then

By Carol Perkins

Surrounding myself with flowers makes me happy. That is why a trip to a greenhouse or any store that has a garden shop draw me inside.

Last year, I ignored anything outside the back or front door of my house as if I lived in a condo. Guy kept the yard looking nice, but I didn't set out one flower or put any in pots. I must have been in a slump. This year, however, I have already loaded my pots with color and even watered them. Guy is impressed.

My interest could be because of the lights now strung under the porch (around 40 feet) on my patio, which I could not justify the need to my questioning husband as he stood on a ladder with an electric drill and screws.

Quarles says USDA opinion provides certainty to hemp industry

Deparment's legal opinion affirms hemp may be transported across state lines

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles issued a statement following the publication of a legal opinion from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on hemp clarifying that hemp is a legal agricultural crop that can be moved across state lines:

"The policy announcement from the United States Department of Agriculture confirms what Kentucky has been saying all along: The 2018 Farm Bill made hemp legal nationwide, and it is unlawful for any state agency to interfere in the transportation of lawfully produced hemp. This announcement provides much-needed certainty for the hemp industry in Kentucky and across the nation.
