Runaway couples at the next Genealogical Society meeting

Elopements Abound! Come hear all the news on eloping and run-away couples at the next meeting of the Adair County Genealogical Society, Monday, June 3, 2019, at 5pmCT at the Adair County Library.

LeeAnn Harmon Jessee will dish up the goods on a few elopers of yesteryear. There are some highly amusing tales of horses, buggies, conspirators and more. Even law enforcement involvement and maybe a shotgun or two!

KSP Participates in Click-It-or-Ticket campaign

The Kentucky State Police (KSP) will participate in this year's national Click It or Ticket (CIOT) seat belt campaign, which will take place May 20 through June 2, 2019. CIOT is a highly visible seat belt enforcement campaign that includes highly visible enforcement and media messaging to ensure motorists are buckled up.

KSP Post 15 Welcomes New Telecommunicators

Twenty Kentucky State Police telecommunicators from throughout the commonwealth were recognized on Friday, May 10, 2019 at graduation ceremonies for the fourteenth class of the agency's in-house Telecommunications Academy.

The Post 15 graduates of the 14th KSP Telecommunications Academy included:
  • Paige Jones, of Knifley. Jones is a 2015 graduate of Adair County High School. She is the daughter of Stephen and Melissa Lynn Cumberland.
  • Zane Bemis, of Elkhorn. Bemis is a 2017 graduate of Taylor County High School. He is the son of Bill and Mandy Bemis.
"Across the state, KSP telecommunicators provide a lifeline to both citizens in need and officers in the field," says KSP Commissioner Rick Sanders. "They serve as an unseen, but vital link in keeping law enforcement officers and the public safe at all times of the day or night."

Tour120 Walk Historic Columbia booklets available now

Tour 120 Historic Preservation and Tourism marketing effort launches this weekend, May 18-19, with architectural tours across the Commonwealth. Adair is one of 19 counties participating, including Campbell, Fulton, Hickman, Laurel, McCracken, Woodford, Bourbon, Fayette, Gallatin, Jefferson, Logan, Montgomery, Boyle, Franklin, Grant, Kenton, Marion and Pike.

Adair County walking tour booklets are available before the close of business at the Adair County Library, Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Office and at City Hall. The Trabue Russell House will be open this weekend, May 18 and 19, 2019, on Saturday from 9am-4pmCT, and on Sunday from 1-5pmCT.

FRANKFORT, KY -- Kentucky has more National Register historic sites than 46 other states. And, all 120 Kentucky counties have at least one historic site.

Date Change: School Board meeting will be Tue 21 May

This is official notification that the Regular School Board Meeting that is scheduled for Thursday, May 16, 2019 has been rescheduled to Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at 6pmCT.

The meeting will be held at the Adair County Board of Education Conference Room, 1204 Greensburg St, Columbia, KY. This meeting is considered a Special Regular School Board Meeting due to the change in date. The public is invited to attend.

Today is Deadline to Request Mail-In Absentee Ballot

Frankfort, KY - Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes is reminding Kentuckians that the deadline to request a mail-in absentee ballot for Kentucky's Primary Election is today, Tuesday, May 14.

"Kentuckians who cannot get to the polls on Election Day have the option of voting absentee before the election," said Grimes, Kentucky's Chief Election Official. "I am thankful for our county clerks who facilitate absentee voting for voters through the mail and in their offices."

Individuals who do not qualify to vote by mail-in absentee ballot may still be eligible to vote early in person prior to May 21, Election Day. In-person absentee voting, which is conducted during the county clerk's regular business hours, is currently open statewide and will conclude on May 20.

Choirs will perform Thursday, 16 May 2019 at Columbia UMC

The public is invited to hear the Adair County High School and the Adair County Middle School in their Spring Concert. The event is scheduled for 7pmCT Thursday, May 16, 2019 at the Columbia United Methodist Church, 202 Burkesville Street, Columbia, Ky.

Music director Ginna Marsh Franklin and her students have been working to spread the word about the special event so that everyone knows they are welcome at the concert.

Sources of Strength program chooses three ACHS students

Adair County Schools has implemented the Sources of Strength (SOS) program in the KET series over the past year and kids have responded well to that program. Jenna Rodgers, 11th grade; Bree Butler, 10th grade; and Amber Loy, 9th grade; applied, were selected and will be in Hazard, KY this weekend, May 18-19, 2019 to work on Kentucky Educational Television's Sources of Strength program script review. SOS peer leaders have led multiple SOS campaigns throughout the school year.

Juanita Charlotte Hodges, 81, Greensburg, KY (1937-2019)

She was a retired Certified Nursing Assistant for Jane Todd Crawford Hospital, Life Line Home Health, a private caregiver and a wonderful nanny.

Juanita Charlotte Scott Hodges passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at her residence. She was 81 years old.

The funeral services for Mrs. Hodges will be conducted at 11amCT on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at the Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home, 206 S. Main St., Greensburg, KY, with burial to follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Bro. Larry Wisdom and Bro. Brad Davis will be officiating.

Visitation is requested from 4pmCT until 8pmCT on Monday at the Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home and after 7amCT on Tuesday until time of the funeral service.

Delores Clements Carrier, 89, Liberty, KY (1930-2019)

Delores Clements Carrier of Batavia, Ohio passed away, Monday, May 13, 2019 at Fair Oaks Health System in Jamestown, Kentucky. She was 89 years old.

Graveside services will be at 10amCT on Thursday May 16, 2019 at Austin Cemetery, Austin Cemetery Road, Dunnville, Kentucky, with Bro. Dewayne Mondie officiating. Interment will follow in the Austin Cemetery.

No visitation is planned.

LWC Women's golf begins play at the NAIA Championship

The Lindsey Wilson women's golf team begins play at the 2019 NAIA National Championship Tournament on Tuesday afternoon in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The 25th annual tournament is being held at the par-72, 5,847 yard Lincoln Park Golf Course. Lindsey Wilson is scheduled to tee off in the afternoon session on Tuesday at 1:50pmCT, followed by an 8:45amCT tee time on Wednesday for the second round. LWC is paired with William Penn (IA) and Midway (KY) for the first two rounds.

May 14 is Kentucky Gives Day

Lexington, KY - The seventh annual Kentucky Gives Day is underway, and Kentuckians near and far are asked to support the causes they care about at www.kygives.org through 11:59pmET today. The 24-hour online giving campaign, which has raised over $1.6 million in six years, began at midnight.

174 nonprofit organizations representing a wide range of causes are participating in the 24-hour event this year. For a list of the participating 501 (c)(3) charities and profiles of each, as well as real-time fundraising totals, visit www.kygives.org. You can also follow event progress on Twitter and Facebook, with the hashtag #kygives19.

LWC Softball competes against Grand View Tuesday morning

No. 1-seeded Lindsey Wilson softball is set to compete against No. 3-seeded Grand View (IA) Tuesday morning at 11amCT in the winner's bracket of the NAIA Opening Round in Columbia, Kentucky. The matchup of USC-Beaufort and Saint Xavier is set to follow at 1:30pmCT at Marilyn D. Sparks Park, Lindsey Wilson Sports Complex, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY.

The Blue Raiders (47-2) advanced after defeating Saint Xavier (IL) 2-1 in an extra-inning matchup on Monday afternoon.

The winner of the Lindsey/Grand View matchup advances to the NAIA Opening Round Championship game scheduled for 11amCT Wednesday.

It's currently 42F at the Adair County Mesonet station. Watch out for patchy fog this morning, which should clear by 8amCT. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 68F and calm wind becoming north around 6 mph in the morning.

Tonight will be mostly clear, with an overnight low around 47F and light and variable wind.

Patchy fog is possible again on Wendesday morning, and should clear by 7amCT. There is a 30% chance of showers on Wednesday, with thunderstorms also possible later in the day. Otherwise, watch for mostly cloudy skies and mild temperatures, with a high near 71F. Calm wind becoming southwest 5 to 8 mph in the morning.

There is a slight chance of thunderstorms late in the day on Wednesday. It should be mostly cloudy overnight, with a low around 54F and light and variable wind.
