A Wild Onion Tale...or a Rite of Spring...

By Mike Watson

The coming of Spring brings to mind an old story. When I was a young sprout, likely the late 1960s or very early 1970s, there was an occasion when, along with either our Dad, Carl Watson, or uncle, Roy Bunch, or both, I was witness to a scene at Mr. Fred Pickerell's store, which was located at Gadberry.

It was a lazy spring day and several men were gathered at the store, including Mr. Monty Gadberry, Joe Gadberry, Paul Frankum and Carl Turner.

Mr. Fred was busy around the store while the others talked and joked.

Pulaski awarded $25M BUILD grant to improve KY461

U.S. DOT funds will enhance safety, address traffic congestion

By Jordan Smith/Amber Hale

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Matt Bevin today joined U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao, U.S. Representative Hal Rogers, Kentucky Transportation Secretary Greg Thomas and local officials in Somerset to celebrate $25 million in federal funds for an interchange improvement and road widening project on KY 461 in Pulaski County.

New interchanges will replace the current intersections at KY 461 and KY 80, and Valley Oak Drive and Coin Road. This work is a regional priority for south central Kentucky to improve safety, reduce traffic congestion, support area industries and enhance economic development. A three-mile section of KY 461 - a route used heavily by commercial trucks and Lake Cumberland tourists traveling from I-75 - will also be widened from two to four lanes.

A $59.5 million Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) federal grant was awarded to the Pulaski County Fiscal Court, Calloway County Fiscal Court, and Owensboro Riverport Authority in December 2018.

Brussels sprout veggie gaining in popularity

Thanks to my daughter-in-law Amy I've come to know these little cabbages are also tasty. They turn out especially well when cut in half and oven-roasted with butter and garlic - she sent a photo today that shows one of the many ways Brussels Sprouts are being used.

Brussels sprouts have had a bad reputation for being bitter, mushy little veggies.

But, according to the gourmets and foodies, this is all because they are cooked incorrectly. If they are boiled too long or otherwise overcooked, you get the mushy foul-smelling gunk that everyone hates.

But if they are cooked properly, the cute little cabbage buds turn bright green and slightly crisp with a nutty and sweet flavor.

Beware, there is a slitherer in here...

By Mike Watson

Spring is here according to the calendar; and spring-like weather is here, at the moment. We have flying insects and underground critters coming to the surface.

I've encountered more than one snake already this season. That brought to mind an old 'story' from February 1902, as follows:

We are indebted to our friend, Dr. J.N. Page, for the following snake story:

Nonprofit Sales Tax Exemption effective March 26

HB 354 makes a change to the law on admissions and tangible property for nonprofit fundraising, which had been taxable because of HB 487, which was passed in April of 2018.

By Glenn Waldrop

Frankfort, KY - - Governor Bevin's March 26th signing of HB 354 resolved questions and confusion about the application of sales tax to nonprofit sales.

Due to an emergency clause in this legislation, sales of admissions and tangible property sales at fundraising events by all nonprofit groups and governmental organizations are now exempt from sales tax for transactions on or after March 26, 2019. These nonprofit, governmental, and civic organizations will no longer charge sales tax on these types of transactions as specified in Sections 28-29 of HB 354. All of these non-profit organizations should discontinue charging sales tax to their customers and benefactors immediately.

Please note that this new exemption does not apply to sales by retail businesses such as bookstores and thrift stores owned or operated by nonprofit or governmental groups.
