Update on JOY Ministries Annual Fund

J.O.Y. is asking ALL Adair county residents to donate--whether $5 or $5000--to allow J.O.Y. to continue to bring hope to those in our community that need it most!

By Maggie Coleman, J.O.Y. Ministries Treasurer

J.O.Y. Ministries' "Experience J.O.Y. This Christmas!" Annual Campaign continues to progress towards it $15,000 goal. Since the launching of the campaign last month, J.O.Y. has received almost $4,500 in donations.

This week brought in two large anonymous donations, one from the state of Georgia! This money will be used to fund the Crisis Resource Center, run a camp for at-risk youth this coming summer, maintain the emergency shelter to be built in the new year, and begin an after-school Bible study program.

The Crisis Resource Center continues to provide services to almost 200 people per month and is staffed by volunteers, including Lindsey Wilson Bonner Scholars, and by part-time worker Billy Payne. J.O.Y. also organizes its annual Mission Week, where local students serve the community in July, and conducts mission trips to places around the country and the world, including those areas most recently devastated by hurricanes.

J.O.Y. is asking ALL Adair county residents to donate--whether $5 or $5000--to allow J.O.Y. to continue to bring hope to those in our community that need it most!

Farm Bill passes the House of Representatives

By Michael Gossum, Communications Director for Congressman James Comer

Today the House of Representatives passed a five-year Farm Bill. Congressman Comer, along with 368 other congressional colleagues, voted in support of the bill. The Agriculture Improvement Act (H.R. 2) includes many incremental wins for rural America. It fully protects crop insurance, makes significant improvements to rural broadband, and implements key changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

On Tuesday, the Senate adopted the compromise with an 87-13 vote. The Agriculture Improvement Act will now be sent to President Trump to be signed into law.

PSC moves to streamline rate adjustment process for rural EDCs

By Andrew Melnykovych

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) has opened a proceeding to determine how to simplify the process used by rural electric distribution cooperatives when applying for rate adjustments.

In an order issued yesterday, the PSC noted that the majority of the expenses used to determine the rates of distribution cooperatives are the pass-through of generation and transmission costs. Those costs already have been approved by the PSC in separate proceedings setting the rates of generation and transmission cooperatives.

Therefore, "the issues presented in rate cases filed by distribution cooperatives are not as complicated, nor do they have the same impacts, as those presented in rate cases filed by vertically integrated investor-owned utilities," the PSC said.

The PSC said that the revised process will be implemented on a pilot basis. If it proves successful, the PSC would move toward making the regulatory changes needed to implement the new process on a permanent basis.

Kesslers Road Trip: Where Adair County ends and Russell begins

By Tiffany Kessler

Crocus, KY - Where Adair County ends and Russell County begins. Though the sun stayed hidden and the panic of potential snow was palpable, on Saturday, December 9, 2018, we decided to journey out for a short road trip.

The Crocus community has always held a sign that I think is so enduring - "Population 16 and growing". The "and growing" addition triggers the questions: "Who is moving to this community that borders the county?" or "Which family may be expecting the newest member of Crocus?"

By Linda Waggener

What are your favorite Christmas memories?

My niece Mitzi Bault and I had a fine lunch visit at Liberty Road General Store & Diner the other day. In a brief visit with owner Patty Edwards, we shared some favorite Christmas memories.

Patty remembered her first record player, a gift she got for Christmas. She said, "Daddy liked Charlie Pride, so that was the music that came with my gift." Music is still a great part of Patty's life today.

Merton lives on through his legacy

By Randy Patrick, The Kentucky Standard

The first time Joe Zarantonello heard of Thomas Merton was the day Merton died. Yet it was Merton who brought him to Bardstown. "I was studying for my exams at Notre Dame ... and I heard this news bulletin that said, 'Thomas Merton, Trappist monk ... was electrocuted in Bangkok,'" he recalled. That was 50 years ago this week.
