A buggy accident was in this news item from the past

Hunter Durham of Columbia shared this news item from the past headlined, "An Accident."
"One afternoon, last week, while Mr. F.H. Durham and his little son Alden, and Mr. Durham's mother, Mrs. M.E. Durham, we're en route to Greensburg, to be present at the marriage of Mrs. Durham's granddaughter, they met with an accident while crossing Skinhouse Branch, 8 miles from Colombia. The buggy upset and all three were dumped into the stream. Mrs. Durham got considerably hurt, but there will be no serious results."
Young Alden was the late Oma Alden (O.A./Cotton) Durham, father of Henry Hunter Durham, Attorney At Law, Public Square, Columbia, KY. This item had been copied from the paper by Mary Elizabeth Feather Durham about the accident in route to Vera Durham's wedding. Hunter said it was the only time he could remember having seen his Dad's first name, Oma, written out.

Carol Perkins: Shopping with husbands

Previously by Carol: Carol Perkins: The forgotten joys of the Sears catalog

By Carol Perkins

Shopping is not something Guy and I do together very often. This last weekend we were in the Cool Springs area (Franklin, Tennessee) and he said he needed a pair of dress casual pants and a new shirt for a trade show coming up this month, so we went to the mall.

His normal shopping place didn't have anything that appealed to him (probably because this is the only place he shops and he already has one of every shirt in the narrow selection they offer), so I suggested we go elsewhere.

Paducah man hauls in state-record blue catfish

By Dave Thompson, The Paducah Sun Glynn Grogan had caught big fish before, reeling in 90-pounders twice and several 80-pounders. When he felt a tug on his line Saturday at the Walter Hays Memorial Tournament on the Ohio River, Grogan, 61, knew the blue catfish on his line was abnormally big.

After struggling with the fish for about 10 minutes, he hauled in a 106.9-pound fish, breaking a state record that had stood for nearly 20 years. Read the full story at paducahsun.com

New Bernheim Forest land to help protect wildlife, environment

By Kacie Goode, The Kentucky Standard

Bernheim Forest wildlife preserve welcomed hundreds of guests this past weekend for its annual ColorFest fall celebration, but visitors to the arboretum and research forest see only a small portion of the land it protects. Two days before the ColorFest kickoff, Bernheim officials announced the acquisition of a 494-acre tract of land near Cedar Grove in Bullitt County.

The addition of the land brings Bernheim's total acreage to 16,137, signifying the forest's vast expansion since its establishment in 1929 and making it the largest privately held forest dedicated to education and conservation in the eastern United States, according to a press release. The land assists in the creation of the Cedar Grove Wildlife Corridor.

We would love to fill the stands with BLUE cheering on your Adair County Band! Contact information is at the end of this story.

By Jennifer Hardwick

Being a member of the Adair County Band is truly a lesson in dedication and commitment. These students, who range from 6th to 12th grade, work for months in order to unite as a group and reach levels of success that many only dream of.

Beginning in late May, upperclassmen hold practices with incoming first-year marchers in order to help them begin to learn the basics of marching. Then, throughout the month of June, colorguard and percussion hold mini-camps to begin learning foundational skills essential for their individual sections. A Visual Camp is also held for the entire band at the end of June, which gives them the opportunity to work as a whole group for the first time as they learn various aspects of precision marching and body control.
