Kentucky Color: Christmas for the Children of Kabale

A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE - When the need of a small community high in mountains of Kabale were made manifest to a group of concerned Christians in Adair County, Russell County and Pulaski County, a mission work began to make a change . . . a result of which includes a new school facility for the children of Kabale. Billy Joe Fudge writes, "I like to believe, it is a Christmas miracle. Indeed it is a miracle. Recently when all the children were shown their new school facility, one of the wide-eyed little preschoolers proclaimed, 'God has remembered us!' "

By Billy Joe Fudge

When Brother Sam Tindimwebwa and I first became friends, I immediately felt his concern for the children of his community. I'm convinced that his ministry to the people and especially the children in and around Kabale, Uganda is not of his choosing as much as it is an answer to a call from God.

I became even more convinced when I began to see that Brother Sam was putting almost all of his income from his consulting business into the education and care of 40 children. Additionally, his Mum was contributing most of her school teacher retirement, time, life and home toward that same effort.

Christmas 2017: Grandma Bagby's Boiled Custard

By Linda Waggener

My cousin Beth Leftwich Lomax has been doing some Christmas cooking and reporting. She wrote, "Just got through making Grandma Bagby's boiled custard. I could hear her telling me to keep stirring. Do not walk away from the custard on the stove. Keep it at just the right heat. Don't let it boil. You will know when it is done because it will feel different. AND. . . she was right. That wonderful woman taught me to sew, quilt, can, freeze and many other things. I am so grateful to her."

Wally Burress sends: Sad word of 2 great Adair Countians deaths

Wally Burress writes:
I just wanted to update you on the recent deaths of a couple of our dearest friends. You recently shared a story (See: Link: 103 year old Columbia, KY native featured) about Mrs. Frances Carlton's 103rd Birthday. I'm sorry to report that she passed away yesterday morning, December 23, 2017. She had a wonderful long life but we will still miss her!

Also you posted a story about Col.George Morris and his wife Eloise. He passed away a couple weeks after that story was posted and she also passed away a few weeks ago.

Col. Morris and Mrs.Carlton were two people from the "Greatest Generation," he as an Air Force pilot and she as a "Rosie the Riveter" in support of the war. Regards, - Wally Burress
Thanks Wally Burress: We will be posting the arrangements for Mrs. Carlton's service when it is received from Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home. Our efforts to post the obituary of Col. Morris seems to have failed, but maybe can still do so and add to your own story, with significant links, Sad word of the passing of Col. George Morris - EW

Danville hires preservation coordinator: An idea for Columbia? CM area towns?

To the best of our knowledge, the City of Columbia doesn't have a certified preservationist, nor are we aware of one in Burkesville, Campbellsville, Edmonton, Greensburg, Liberty, Russell Springs or Jamestown.

The Kentucky Press Association has provided CM with a link to a story in the Danville, KY, Advocate-Messenger: Danville will keep certified local government tag after hiring preservationist. The story is by Ben Kleppinger, and was posted Friday, December 22, 2017 in the Danville Advocate-Messenger. The story gives economic benefits resulting from the designation.

Jill Petrey: Would love to see photo of Mike Watson's silver tree

Comments re article 94669 Mike Watson Memories of Christmases Past

Jill Petrey writes:
Would love to see a photo of the silver tree that Mr. Watson has written about. I remember having one as a child, early to mid 70's. --Jill Petrey
Thanks, Jill Petrey: - This is a matter we're taking with utmost urgency! A memory prompt is that the trees were popularized when Russia jumped ahead in the space age, terrifying all of us Cold Warriors when the first satellite crossed our skies. Working with poorly prompted brain, so we may need help until it comes to us. There may be one in our files. If there is we'll post or link. - EW.

Celia Downey's touching memory: My Horse Cutter

The last 19 of Cutter Downey's 32 year life were spent with Celia at the Downey farm on Russell Creek. It was a wonderful bond, as only those who truly love animals can know. There would come a time, she knew when she would have to let go. That time came in 2017. This is the story she writes which includes that time: My Horse Cutter

By Celia Downey

The events of this story occurred on the farm lands surrounding Russell Creek in the Northern parts of Adair County Columbia, Kentucky. The events span the Fall of 1992 through the Winter of 2011.

Six years later during the Winter of 2017, I am finally able to share the story about Cutter, my mare. Mysteriously in the Fall of 1992, the mare landed in Adair County Kentucky and became my Blessing in Life. We explored the lands most days, spanning almost twenty two years including Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. Cutter was the perfect size, we fit perfectly together. Cutter, my majestic black mare had more common sense and tolerance than most people. She had a calm solid soul with soft eyes, and understood every word spoken between us.

Mike Watson: Memories of Christmases Past

The Watsons have two trees, he writes: "Today, Renea and I usually put up two Christmas trees. One in the living room, tall and green, decorated just so. . . That one is for "people" to see. Now, back in the den, where we lounge, read, watch television and the like, there is another tree most years. A throwback from elementary school at Sparksville Grade Center and second grade with Miss Marie Collins--a silver tree, circa 1964 or so, space age in design, the Sputnik. Most people cringe if they even think about one. I remember coming home from school that first time, when Miss Marie let us decorate it, and told my parents what a wonderful thing it was. No one else was impressed, I suppose." - MIKE WATSON
AT LEFT, at Jill Petrey's Request, the author sent a photo of the Silver Christmas tree he and Renae still put up each year, recalling a favorite childhood memory at Sparksville Grade Center.

By Mike Watson

Christmas memories are very important and most folk have one or two that come vividly to mind. I remember several specific Christmases, but they were all good for me. I remember going to the woods with dad or my brothers and cutting a tree, once or twice with snow covering the fields and woods. This was tradition, until the fad for artificial trees came along. Then, and since, with one year as exception, we have always had a green "fake" tree. No mess, no muss. After we moved to town and settled in on High Street, we had the "Christmas closet" that housed nothing but Yuletide trimmings.
