Wildflowers of KY: Yellow Trumpet Vine on White Oak Road

2017-06-08 - Easter Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com photo(c).
This yellow trumpet vine was found on White Oak Road near Acree Road in Eastern Adair County, closer to Russell Springs than to Columbia. It's yellow, uncommon in the wild but a color readily available in plant stores. However due to the condition of the plant - not the healthiest for the usually hardy vine, and also because it is in an area of heavy spraying, one would wonder is the color change might have been due to the herbicide. - EW

Charles Marshburn: Prefers weeds to trash along roadsides

By Charles Marshburn
Personal Commentary

Personally, I prefer the weeds to the trash along side the road.

The tractors uncover a lot of garbage and I presume it is illegally dumped.

I know those unfortunate folks who live on 704 get tired of picking up the trash that others throw out of their vehicles as they pass.

How about some help from those in charge in the county and let the weeds grow!

KY Afield Outdoors: Encourage young anglers

By Kevin Kelly

Frankfort, KY - If free fishing weekend was a homerun with your kiddos, you might be wondering about how to keep the momentum going throughout the summer.

Take a cue from them: keep it fun.

Does this mean they need to catch a fish or get a bite every cast? Not necessarily. Fun can be wading a creek or floating down one for the first time in a canoe or kayak. Fun can be seeing how many different species of fish you can catch or how many fishing holes you can visit this summer. Fun can be catching your own live bait then using it to catch dinner.

Fun does not have to be complicated, but finding the time can be for grown-ups.

A memorable fishing trip does not require an entire day. Take off after work with your new fishing buddy and fish until dusk, or rise early and fish until mid-morning.

Billy Joe Fudge: Road work needed on Hwy. 61 in New Columbia?

Call-in personal commentary from Billy Joe Fudge

Billy Joe Fudge reports that he's seen several near-accidents in New Columbia and hopes the City Council will address the road needs causing them in this month's budget session.

He says the challenges are occurring where drivers are having to guess who has rights of way and where lanes are, with no markings, no signs and no lights at the New Columbia turn off Hwy. 61 before you get to the Walmart traffic light heading south out of town.
