Joe Hare thinks Veterans Day should be school holiday

By Joe Hare

When I looked at the calendar for the Adair County School system for the coming year one day NOT included in the days they take off is very upsetting. That is Veterans Day. This a slap in the face to all veterans that served and sacrificed so that we can have the freedoms we have today, including the freedom to make the choice to dishonor us. It is no wonder we have the problems we have in America today as our children are not taught to respect the veteran for what they have done.

I urge the administration and all school board members to reconsider this decision and honor all living and veterans that gave that Ultimate Sacrifice that we can live free in America by not have school on Veterans Day.

ACMS students learn about CPR from Roger Cundiff

2016-02-25 - ACMS, 322 Gen. John Adair Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo by Shamarie Harper, Adair County School District Media Coordinator.
Today, February the 25, 2016 it became a little safer to be in the 8th grade at Adair County Middle School. Lou Ann Carter, Practical Living Teacher at ACMS, collaborated with Roger Cundiff from Adair County Emergency Services to provide students with a live demonstration and lesson over CPR, provided by a professional from their own community. This type of engaged learning is becoming the standard throughout the Adair County Schools. And the bonding between community and school continues to grow and strengthen. One can only imagine where we will be in another year from now. - Shamarie Harper, Adair County Schools, Media/PR coordinator

Digging the Middens - What archaeologists will see about use

'I can only assume that archaeologists in the future will determine, from searching the huge middens that we are creating, that society in the early twenty-first century is so wasteful it's shameful.' - Joyce Coomer
Click on headline for complete commentary

By Joyce Coomer

Archaeologists consider middens a source of information about a culture. Within a midden can be found remnants of a culture's foods, utensils and clothing, and occasionally burial sites.

I watch with sorrow as thousands and thousands of useful items are discarded each day in this town (and I'm sure in all other towns across the country), items ranging from clothing to furniture to kitchen utensils to storage containers to decorative items to building materials. Many of these callously discarded items are useful; some are new, some only need cleaning.

LWC'S Nancy Sinclair named a Remarkable Raider

By Duane Bonifer

Longtime Lindsey Wilson College staff member Nancy Sinclair was honored Wednesday night by the college's Student Government Association.

Sinclair was named a "Remarkable Raider" by the LWC Student Government Association. The annual award -- which was given Wednesday night during the second round of "Lindsey Wilson Idol" -- is presented annually to an LWC staff member who the LWC SGA officers believe embodies the college's mission of serving "every student, every day."

Sinclair, who has worked at the liberal arts college since 1987, is executive assistant to LWC President William T. Luckey Jr. In 2011, the LWC National Alumni Association named Sinclair an honorary LWC alumna.

Carol Perkins: Everyone should vote

A Message to All, Especially Women: 'We have to trust that at least one candidate will be good for America,' CAROL PERKINS
Previous column: Carol Perkins: Still shocked by personal attacks

By Carol Perkins

Not registered to vote? Why would any American not register to vote? I was watching a news channel not long ago when a man about my age told a reporter, "I have never voted, but I'm voting this time." Never voted? I was stunned.

Here is what I hear from listening to those who don't vote: "My vote doesn't matter." There have been elections won or lost by one or two votes. "None of them (candidates) are any good." Do we know what for sure? We have to trust that at least one candidate will be good for America. "They're all crooks." Is the word "politician" synonymous with "crook?" I happen to know some very honest people who serve in many political positions. A bad politician, like a bad teacher, doesn't mean the entire system is corrupt. I also hear, "I don't care who wins." We all better care.
