Betsy Fausnaugh: On being vigilant

By Betsy Fausnaugh

Having lived here for 12 years now and having come from off, perhaps I see differently than those born and raised here. But in response to being "vigilant", I think that we can no longer look the other way when things seem out of the ordinary.

Are we looking closely enough at our surroundings that we see strangers moving into long abandoned homes and don't question, why now, where did they come from? Vehicles from several states, coming and going all the time. Terrorists or others up to no good, thrive on communities that go about their days and don't take a second look.

Be vigilant - what does that mean to you?

by Linda Waggener

Many of our country's leaders say this is a time for Americans to "be vigilant" so I'm asking columbiamagazine.com readers what that means to you?

How do we live vigilantly by definition "keenly watchful to detect danger; wary" without being like the boy who cried wolf?

Does where we live make a difference?

Poetry by Robert Stone: To Chance a Better Life, a sonnet

To chance a better life
~ a sonnet asking questions
What god would let the weak be trampled down?
It seems the answer is all gods are weak
but that supposes higher powers frown
on lesser beings from their cloudy peak.

What good would save itself while evil grew?
Perhaps the question is to faith not fair
for that demands that hope be always true
and love be able to dispel despair.

What guard would constant catch all warning signs?
Not likely where diversity is prized
and floods the world with multiple aligns
and unexpected flashpoints well disguised.

We only chance a better life to live
when we determine much respect to give.
~ Robert Stone, 12 December 2015

Tom Chaney: Murder in Scandinavia

Of Writers And Their Books: Murder in Scandinavia. Tom says Mankell is a master at the description of pursuit; and at the use of landscape to ratchet up our sense of urgency. This column first appeared 13 February 2011.
The next earlier Tom Chaney column: "Me Growed from a Pumpkin Seed"

By Tom Chaney

Murder in Scandinavia

When favorite mystery customer comes in the store and plops a book down saying, "Tom, you've got to read this," I jump to and get it done. She allows for no excuses. It is not a suggestion but an order.

Thus came I to read Henning Mankell's fifth Kurt Wallander mystery, One Step Behind.
