Roger Lacy: Old Breeding Grade School closed after 1962-63 school year Roger Lacy writes: I am pretty sure that the old Breeding grade school closed after the 1962-63 school year, since the plaque at the entrance of the old Sparksville Grade Center was dated 1963. The high school grades moved from Breeding in 1954 when Adair County High School first opened. - Roger LacyComments re photo 63288 Breeding High School entry fifty years ago 2015-11-21 19:51:54 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History

A visit to old Breeding High School By Linda Waggener and Geniece Marcum On a perfect sunny November Friday, we explored southern Adair County toward the Cumberland County line and visited the little town of Breeding, KY. The main downtown has been bypassed so you have to turn off Highway 61 and wander in order to see the character of the town. We rode out Independence Ridge Road until we couldn't go any farther, then on the return stopped to take a picture at the old Breeding High School. An all time favorite CM Cold Weather a-coming story From Just a year ago: George Rice's "Reminiscing: Thanksgiving and Hog Killing." "Up until the 30s, 40s, and 50s, it was an annual thing to kill hogs on Thanksgiving days in the Green River Country of Adair County. It took days of planning, and the morning started with getting the scalding box ready, and the boiling water just right - the temperature was measured by the number of times one's finger could be swiped through the water. The work started at 4am, but sometimes, the actual shooting of hog had to await the daylight so the men could see he sights on their rifles. There was scraping, then hanging the hog on the gambling poles, then butchering and sausage making. The tenderloin was given to the women who prepared lunch for the men and workers ate in shifts. There was lard making, with its side of cracklings, wonderful wonderful for crackling bed. George Rice remembers the process in great detail, and wonders if those were the good old days, even with the rabbit hunting which followed the Thanksgiving meat making ritual," George Rice wondered, after enjoying a far different breakfast on Thanksgiving Day, 2014, and concludes that they were. They were the Good Old Days. By George Rice As I sat at the breakfast table this morning eating my bowl of oats I began to reminisce the so called good old days of hog killings. At our house, it was an annual thing to kill hogs on Thanksgiving Day.
