Paw Paw trees are host plants for beautiful Zebra Butterflies

Click on photo by Billy Joe Fudge, left, of Zebra Butterfly on another of its host plants, Milk Weed for for story on Paw Paw Culture by Dr. Ben Arnold.

Vonnie Kolbenschlag writes:
The paw paw tree is the host plant for the Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly. Butterflies are picky when it comes to plants on which to lay eggs for larvae to develop. Larvae of each butterfly kind develop with usually only one kind of plant called their host plant. Right now there is a lot of interest in Monarchs which need milkweed plants as host plants. But, Zebra Butterflies, which I think are beautiful - even in the caterpillar form - which is when they eat, like the paw paw.

As butterflies they can only suck nectar and from many flowers, not particular plants then, and as they do, there is pollination. Local pollinators are important for many crops. Plant paw paws for the Zebra Swallowtail! --Vonnie Kolbenschlag

Exact number of Wet-Dry Petition signers needed not known yet

Based on low turnout in 2015 General Election, Wet forces may need as few as approximately 260 valid signatures to get an election restricted to the City of Columbia on the ballot soon. Adair County Court Clerk Lisa Greer, asked for the exact number, says that she will need an official count from Frankfort before announcing the number.

By Ed Waggener

An organization "Progress in Adair County (PAC)" has been organized to get a wet-dry election in Columbia only. Among the leaders behind the effort are Adair County Judge Executive Michael Lee Stephens and Columbia Mayor Curtis Hardwick.

PAC now has a local manager of the effort, Shannon Sexton, and has engaged Derek Helm of Jamestown as an attorney. PAC has an office at 808 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY and is now seeking enough bona fide voter signatures to get the question on a Special Election ballot as early as possible.

By Harry Mack
From Campbellsville, KY, Fri 6 Nov 2015

For those of you that read my commentary about shysters trying to rip off people over the phone, I would like to make an additional comment that may save some people a lot of worry.

Within the last week, I have received two phone calls, one from the 202 (D.C.) area code and another from a Texas cell phone number. Both of the calls claimed to be the IRS and both said that I owed money and if I didn't pay it, I would be arrested!

VARMINTOLOGY: Larry Smith reports on squirrelly prognostication tool for the winter ahead. Says Campbellsville Squirrel activity may be an omen of "No School at all in January."

By Ed Waggener

"The West Main Street squirrels know something," Larry Smith confided on Friday, from observations at his home in the West Main Street, Campbellsville, KY neighborhood. "They're cacheing every acorn and nut in sight," he said. "That means they think there's a bad, bad winter, ahead - I think the squirrels are saying it might be time to call off school in January, altogether," he said.
