In memory of Arles Hale (1925-2015)

"And so this graduating class of 1944 closes its high school books forever and goes out into a world of uncertainty -- a class with an abiding faith that peace will return and with peace our place in the shaping of the future of a great country will be there for us--a faith in a great land." from the valedictory address given by Ovel Withers, Jr., a member of the RSHS graduating class of 1944.

By a Russell Countian

My friend Arles Hale was a member of the 1944 graduating class of the old Russell Springs High School and played guard on the 1943-1944 Green Devils basketball team that went 18-0 in the regular season. At just under six feet two inches tall, he was tied for third as the tallest boy in school. Eleven games into that incredible season, he led the team in scoring and he finished the campaign that year with 314 points.

"The opening day of the combined wood duck and teal season used to be on a Wednesday, but we moved it to Saturday this year to give hunters two weekends afield."
