Mike Watson: Comments on education in Adair County, KY On buses and the band: "Bottom line is, we need both and they will come, perhaps not at the same time, but they will come. And, yes, I do pay taxes in Adair County; and, no, I don't have children in the school system; but I will cannot complain about the education I received in Adair County and I do not want to see a decline in the future." - Mike Watson By Mike Watson Adair County Historian The band building, transportation of students and other subjects of late make me ponder. I was not in band, we lived too far from town and there were always chores at home to keep me busy, but I did and do appreciate the band and all the hard work they do, often with little thanks. I can't play anything but the radio, but I enjoy hearing the band--Adair County's or any other. When I began working at Anderson County High in 1983 and students and faculty learned I was from Adair County, the usual was comment was, "Oh, they have a good band. We compete against them." 1 Graf Editorial: The need for crosswalks - protect LWC students Walking Columbia Only those walking Columbia really see urgent needs. Linda and I were out Sunday and noticed a problem which should be immediately addressed. Two young women, who appeared to be Lindsey Wilson College students, were trying to reach Miller Avenue from the sidewalk on Jamestown Street. They waited a good five minutes. Finally, they dashed across the road. They made it. But if either had stumbled or tripped in the heavy traffic, a tragedy might have ensued. Point is, this is just one of perhaps dozens or a hundred or more situations where well marked crosswalks should be a part of the Columbia scene. I, for one, can't wait until those who are walking Columbia share their observations. - ED WAGGENER 2015-09-01 06:17:47 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Commentary
Charles Marshburn: His lunchroom lady just had more time Charles Marshburn writes I suppose Mrs Schneider (the lady who ran our lunchroom) just had more time! We used to go for seconds on certain items and more than once I remember her saying, "Give those boys some more!". "I've got to feed my boys"! Yes sir, she made the time! - Charles MarshburnThanks, Charles Marshburn - And I know you mean no criticism of the excellent personnel who follow guideline to run public schools' cafeterias. It's not their fault that the meals may not be the best a child gets served that day. But there is a better way. I couldn't help but bookmark (Lyon) the segment Anthony Bourdain did on public school lunchrooms in France. They serve wholesome foods. The children get sit down service. They get seconds. They love the food they get. And, it cost them less per meal for food than an American Public School pays. Wow! 2015-09-01 05:54:55 | Comments | Printable version

Today, TUESDAY with CM, 1 Sep 2015 Haiku by Robert Stone for September 1, 2015: Unbridled child claims--Robert Stone, Tuesday, 1 September 2015. -1000 haiku countdown finished, now for some more days, Day 1449 Most popular today, and it's from CM archives A picture from almost two years ago, December 12, 2013: Travel, Forbus General Store: Whittling man, Roosevelt Upchurch which accompanies the story, Day Trip Travel: Another visit to Forbus General Store . The caption for the photo reads: "Couldn't help but think of back home - Slower days, better days, when whittlers lined the benches at the Adair County Courthouse. Roosevelt Upchurch, the lone whittler Saturday, December 21, 2013, offered to let me sit and whittle with him. Even in this bastion of preservation, he among the few who practice this rural combination of art, meditation and relaxation. Couldn't help but remember John Shelley's famous poem, "The Whittlers," or the promised - still to be fullfilled - intentions of Hill & Jones to re-establish the honored practice in Columbia, and Wid Harris' manifested standing offer of free cedar whittling sticks at Town Barber Shop - and the sadness that no one is taking them. In Fobus, with devotees like Roosevelt Upchurch, the institution seems safe. " A Note: Sadly, Mr. Roosevelt passed yesterday, August 31st. five weeks prior to his 80th birthday. According to the funeral home (Jennings, in Jamestown , Tenn.), arrangements are incomplete as of this morning, but this link Jennings Funeral Home has a link to his name. Remembering Nora Hammond: She was a loyal friend About: Nora Porter Hammond, 63, Russell Co., KY (1952-2015) Nora Porter Hammond was my loyal friend from the time we were kids. We grew up together and attended church together at First Baptist in Russell Springs. In later years, separated by hundreds of miles, we exchanged Christmas cards and paper letters in this age of electronic communication. When first my father and then my mother passed in the late 1990s, Nora came to pay respects and give support, and for the past several years she had taken care of my baby sister's grave, keeping it clean and decorating it with the passing seasons. I'll never forget that. May she rest in eternal peace. - Jim Garner. 2015-09-01 04:04:50 | Comments | Printable version Birthdays and Anniversaries for September 1 Happy Anniversary, Barney and Nancy Taylor (1990) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Anniversary, Burchell and Vera Couch (1964) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Anniversary, Danny and Betty Burris (1978) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Anniversary, Micah and Gayle Harvey | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Anniversary, Sammy and Margaret Taylor | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Amy Leah Irvin (1991) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Ann Martin | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Candice Thomas (1981) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Cynthia Coomer | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Darren Ballou (1990) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Derrick Riter (2006) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Jacob T.
