Remembers Sulphur Well from yesteryear Chuck Medley writes: I too am from Louisville and remember Buelah Villa Hotel in Sulphur Well. I spent a Weekend there. I remember a lot of the same things that you do, especially dinner time. I remember the bowling alley and the pool tables with mesh leather pockets. I also remember the general store across the street. I went back there a couple of years ago to check it out and was very depressed to see all the buildings collapsed and in such disrepair. --Chuck MedleyComments re article 12196 Memories of Gran and Sulphur Wells Buelah Villa Hotel shared by Don Graeter 2013-08-25 19:16:58 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

New birthday added at 3:41amCT to already big August 25 list Another Birthday was added to the birthday list at 3:41amCT, today, August 25, 2013. The list was already large, and includes already, a favorite cousin of my, a favorite couple having an anniversary, a famous Adair County educator, a renowned, respected and retired printer; a renowned, respected, and active picker and father of a very famous little boy; a pair of twins, a Winston more widely known in Adair County than Churchill, and many, many more. In fact, there are about 30 important celebrations and memory birthdays today. For some readers, " Birthdays" is the most important daily read on ColumbiaMagazine.com. We place a high priority on the topic. It's front page, 24 hours a day/7days a week/365 days a year on CM. We go through them each day for duplications and mistakes. But every day people find edits which are needed, and we appreciate that, especially when they are sent using the Comments or Corrections button with the item needing attention. Even though the list is growing at it's fastest pace ever, we're finding fewer corrections needed every day, as now, it seems, readers know that once a birthday is in the database, it is scheduled to reappear each year, as posted, until we are notified otherwise. If we've missed an important birthday for someone in Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell or Taylor Counties, please send using any Contact/Submit button. If you need help filling out an email, call 270-250-2730. - CM 2013-08-25 03:55:59 | Comments | Printable version
Happy Tail: Disposable Pets? How do you explain to a dog? Buttercup is now in home #6, Sugarfoot Farm Rescue, awaiting a return to home #5, which will be her 7th home. Peg writes, remembering her return to Sugarfoot, 'On the way home she put her head on my lap and looked at me with her big brown eyes questionably. How do you explain to a dog that has been bounced around back and forth that it isn't their fault? How do you tell a good dog that they didn't do anything wrong? It would be hard enough to explain to a person but how do you make a dog understand? Click on headline for story with photo(s) The next earlier Happy Tail: Happy Tail - Less than perfect Posted August 22, 2013 By Peg Schaeffer News from Sugarfoot Farm Rescue, 270-378-4521 or 270-634-4675 I had gotten a call from someone who wanted me to take some puppies they had. They were small breed puppies which are easy to place so I stopped by. There were two puppies with their Mom, a Pug/Beagle mix, named Buttercup who was tied in the yard. The owners' concern was that the puppies were becoming more independent, wandering from their Mother's side, and they were afraid they would be hit by a car. One of the puppies had been promised to someone so I took the remaining one, at cute yellow puppy they called Socks. Socks was placed the very next day. The next earlier Tom Chaney column: Roast Pig and Charles Lamb By Tom Chaney Why Not Peace? When we first began to think that opening a bookstore in Horse Cave was no more an insane act than having a world class theatre here, I was living in exile in Philadelphia peddling ticky-tacky souvenirs to unsuspecting flatland tourists. I started looking about me in that far country for books and trying to learn the ins and outs of book buying and selling. Some folks saw me a'coming and correctly judged me for the novice that I was.
