Carol Perkins: Royal baby

Every child born is a royal one to its family, Carol Perkins notes, in this column which tells what a difference progress has made in the business of babies.
The next earlier Carol Perkins column: If I didn't have a dog, I wouldn't have a dog

By Carol Perkins

The royal baby's arrival has certainly made a splash around the world. By now even the most isolated dweller has likely received the news. Even though the coverage may be a little over the top, some of us can't resist watching. I can't think of a single person in the United States who could have a baby and the "world" would party. Probably the birth of Lisa Marie Presley was the most anticipated of any birth I have lived to see so far, but I don't begrudge citizens a reason to party.

MIKE WATSON: School start always brings mixed feelings

The opening of Adair County Schools on August 14, 2013, is highly anticipated, Mike Watson notes, "Work reported in Columbia Magazine on progress made on facilities and grounds in anticipation of opening day should elicit feelings of pride in every Adair Countian. That first day of school for students--and even earlier ones for faculty and staff--are fast approaching. He writes about a time when school starts were even earlier than they are now.

It's beginning to feel a lot like...the end of summer vacation...

Mixed feelings of exhilaration and impending doom still grip me at this time of year. Excitement about the commencement of a new school year was and is often overshadowed by the thought of rising daily before sunup to prepare for a day in the classroom. That was true in the fall of 1965 when I started school and continued through the beginning of school year 2009-2010, my last year in the the classroom! With three years outside the education field, I still the anticipation at this time of year; and I still wake up early in mid-winter to check school closings and delays!!

Tom Chaney: Slow Years of Wasteful War

Of Writers And Their Books: Slow Years of Wasteful War. Tom reviews Achilles by Elizabeth Cook, a mighty fine yarn, a story we never learn from. The gods of war dazzle us with "that huge body... which will not rot, which will not stop being beautiful." This column first appeared 27 July 2008.
The next earlier Tom Chaney column: Traipsing Through Georgia

By Tom Chaney

Slow Years of Wasteful War

The Trojan War is over, but the Greeks are having a difficult time working their way back home. Odysseus journeys to the edge of Ocean to provide a sacrificial drink for the shades of the dead and to learn from the seer Tiresias whether or not he will "reach his own father and home in Ithaka again."
The dead surround Odysseus, wanting to know the news. "They have forgotten how hard it is for the living to know things. That the rule is one place at one time.... The truth is he's as ignorant as they were. As they still are."
