Poetry by Robert Stone: Undertones to rough

Undertones to rough
- a sonnet of revelation
When least expected, thoughts before unknown
upstartle mind with sharp epiphany
and undermine routine to now condone
revealed reality polyphony.

Familiar songs that soothe the aching heart
have undertones to rough unsettled views
and siren lures enough to pull apart
contentment, futureless with peace confuse.

New harmonies will never cease to come
to those who open selves to what can be
and fear not what is slightly out of plumb
awaiting righting by today's decree.

The old could not be more than past could see
where grasping loves that failed more loves set free.

- Robert Stone, 6 January 2013

Buffalo Springs Cemetery: Steles and unusual statuary

2013-01-06 - Buffalo Springs Cemetery, Stanford, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
Steles and unusal statuary mark the landscape in Buffalo Springs Cemetery,
a carefully maintained cemetery as old as the nation just west of and overlooking Stanford, Lincoln County, KY. These steles, because of their shape, and pyramidal tops, are also obelisks.

The Three Amigos

On the Sunday before Thanksgiving I received a call that there were three dogs roaming on our road. My first thought was "I don't need any more dogs". But I was told one was a Beagle and a neighbor had called me about her missing Beagle, so I went to investigate. It was a blustery, damp day and by the side of the road were three skinny, scraggly, wet dogs. One was a male tri-color Beagle, one was a red and white female Beagle/Basset Hound mix, and the third one was a male dog that looked like a dust mop. They all were happy to see a friendly face.

Tom Chaney: A Trace of Awe

Of Writers and their Books, A Trace of Awe is an essay on Patricia Cornwell whom Tom says he will keep reading "because of the way she weaves a plot and for the deft skill with which she draws her disagreeable characters." This column first appeared 13 November 2005

A Trace of Awe

I just finished a recent novel by Patricia Cornwell. The books is Trace, published last year [September 2004] and released this summer in mass market paperback -- that's the small size that will fit in a coat pocket or purse. They used to sell for fifty cents. Trace has a cover price of eight bucks -- a rate of inflation that puts the gas companies to shame.

By Chuck Hinman

Picture It!

As the days roll by here at Tallgrass Estates, it seems I am fully satisfied spending more and more time in my recliner, not reading or watching TV but just reminiscing the events that come to mind of a long and fulfilled life. I have pictures out my ears but I rarely refer to them. My best reminiscing is done when I have the TV turned off and lean back in my recliner and just let my mind wander through 83 well-lived years.

The Story of John McQueary

New York City Police Detective, of the Clan McQueary, remembers the oral history of the fight between 'Grandpa McQueary' and his son John McQueary, the son's enlistment and death, and the amateur forensics the grieving father went through to make sure that the remains were his son's - and the overnight transformation of Grandpa McQueary. The detective's daughter is Catherine; who says he'd love a tour to show him where things were and where people lived.

John McQueary was my grandmother's uncle. He is buried at the cemetery by the New Hope Church.

All of my life I have remembered the story of John. He'd had an argument with his father "Grandpa McQueary" that became physical. During the fight John's arm was broken and not long after he ran off to enlist.
