Adair Countian from railroad family still looks for tracks wherever he is

Charles Marshburn writes:
I certainly do appreciate the history lesson. Coming from a railroad family (Atlantic Coast Line, CSX), I still look for the tracks wherever I am. It is a shame the Gandy Dancers were not seen and heard in Columbia. I understand from the rip track, the roundhouse and the road foremen that this was something to behold and the stories were very colorful. - Charles Marshburn

Mike Watson: Railroad attempts in Adair County, KY

The history of Adair County is one with no railroads. But there have been numerous attempts to establish one connecting Adair County to the nation's rail system.

[The following is a very brief overview of the railroad question in Adair County, 1865-1915. A complete survey of the issue would be a volume in and of itself.--MW]

By Mike Watson

The history of Adair County is one with no railroads. Though one was long sought, it was never to be constructed. During the Civil War the nearest railhead was located at Lebanon, Marion County. From that point supplies and troops could be shipped. Many saw the need for more and more miles of steel rails, but during a time of such conflict only necessary repairs were made upon existing track and essential new lines were constructed.

Birthing cry for an Adair Railroad just got weaker and weaker

Jim

Re: Adair County railroads:
Adair Co., KY: Prof. Azbill and the Electric Interurban Railway, 1901-1906

The Nefarious Mr. Burns and His Fivescore Vapor-Mule
Beyond the attempts mentioned in the articles linked above, sporadic efforts to establish a rail line in Adair County continued through at least the early 1920s. In each instance, however, the birthing cry became weaker and death rattle sounded quicker, nearly to the point of the latter becoming an echo of the former. - Jim

Differs on idea of locking outside doors at schools

Suggests organized Run for Cover might give better chance for survival: I simply feel that locking unarmed, defenseless students and staff in a facility when these tragic events are unfolding, may not be the best defense. I hope this opinion is not offensive. I just want folks to have a 'fighting chance' to escape these terrible situations. MIKE NEWTON

Thanks to Robbie Harmon and Kim Goodin for addressing the safety/security issues for the school system. It sends a strong caring message.

I would like to see all school systems evaluate their evacuation/lockdown procedures, just to confirm that it is well thought out in regard to different situations. Unfortunately the dangerous situations that could occur are so different, that a lockdown/evacuation procedure may need to differ depending on circumstance.

The Whitehurst Diaries: Sunset calm after the thunderstorm

She's just learning what to expect from Kentucky weather. Winters came early in Wyoming, with October snows. Decembers in Vermont brought also snow, Christmas carol rehearsal at choir practice. In Kentucky, dandelions still bloom in December and she's still cutting kale and bringing in cabbages from the garden. But hints of hinter rolled down Payne Janes Hill yesterday, causing Pebbles the old horse to assess the changing weather.

An unsettled day, something about the weather not right for what I know of December.

Winters came early in Wyoming, usually with October snow that stayed until spring. Bright blue skies and high sunshine predominated, but companioned by winds that roared icily down from the mountains. Standing on my west-facing porch I could taste and feel snow or sleet borne on the rushing air, watch a storm roll down to the valley until the buildings across the highway were lost in the white and howling blur. When the storm gusted past, the sun glittered on snow, the cold bit fiercely at fingers, ears and toes.
