Remembering Gladys Paxton

Remembering Gladys Paxton Bobby and Lila Loy writes:
Yes, we will all miss Gladys who has been our neighbor for the past several years. She was in a lot of pain, and we all prayed that she could get well if it was God's will. But unanswered prayers are sometime the best ones, He knew that Gladys would be free from pain, and she was ready to see Frank again. Thanks for all who helped us pray for her while she was in the hospital. --Bobby and Lila Loy

LWC 78. Robert Morris 68 in Lou Cunningham Classic

Blue Raider Chase Cox provides 10 points before crowd of 251 in Taylor Countian's hometown
Next at Lou Cunnningham Classic: Lindsey Wilson vs. Martin Methodist
Lindsey Wilson (Columbia, KY), Men's Basketball Team will meet Martin Methodist at 3pmET/2pmCT, Saturday, December 8, 2012, in the men's basketball Lou Cunningham Classic, at Powell Athletic Center, 203 Tiger Way, Campbellsville, KY. - Chris Megginson, Campbellsville University

News from Lindsey Wilson College

Lindsey Wilson College flew high on Friday night, dunking its way to a 78-68 win over Robert Morris (Schaumburg, IL) in the Lou Cunningham Classic at the Powell Athletic Center, 203 Tiger Way, Campbellsville, KY.
DeAntra Scott flushed two of the five dunks on the night for the Blue Raiders to finish with 12 points and six rebounds, while Kalen Kimberland led Lindsey Wilson with 17 points and Wesley Hanspard chipped in with 16.

Chase Cox and Daronte' Clark each reached double figures as well with 10 points on a night that Lindsey Wilson struggled from deep, hitting just 20.0 percent from three. The Blue Raiders did finish shooting 47.3 percent from the field, compared to 39.7 percent for Robert Morris.

The Eagles were led in scoring by Sean Montgomery with a game-high 19 points and Aubrey McAlpine controlled the glass with a game-best seven rebounds.

Leading 15-5 though eight minutes of action, the Blue Raiders continued to move the ball well in transition as Chris Bridges found Cox open in the corner for a three to make the lead 13 with 11:21 to play. Lindsey Wilson hit a bunch of big shots but was also helped by an 0-for-4 start from 3-point range.

Robert Morris fired back with a 5-0 run on a jumper by Dema Sane and made basket on a foul by Maurice Williams.

Just as quick as the Eagles got back in the game, Cox was there with his second three of the game, followed by a pair of free throws from Alex Giergen to stop the Robert Morris momentum.

Coming out of the first media timeout however, Robert Morris went on an 11-3 run until the Lindsey Wilson lead was 27-21 with five minutes left in the first half.

Over those final minutes momentum swept totally back into Lindsey Wilson's favor, utilizing a 9-3 run to take a 36-24 lead into halftime. Kimberland highlighted the spree on a coast-to-coast drive in the final minute to hit a layup with a foul. The senior knocked down the ensuing free throw and Cox banked in a jumper to finish the half.

Robert Morris struggled shooting in the opening frame, hitting just 28.6 percent from the field and 10.0 percent on threes (1-for-4). The Eagles hit their last field goal of the half at the 4:59 mark, misfiring on contested jumpers the rest of the way.

Cox was perfect in the half, hitting a pair of threes and his running jumper to help the Blue Raiders to 45.2 percent shooting.

The Eagles came out of the locker room scoring eight of the first 10 points to climb within six in under three minutes. Once again it was a short-lived burst as Lindsey Wilson used a thunderous dunk from Hanspard and three from Scott to extend the lead back to 50-39 with 12:13 left in the game. Coming out of the first media timeout of the second half, the Eagles played like a different team, turning up the heat on their pressure defense. The effort created some turnovers and Robert Morris started to hit shots to fight within 50-45 with under 10 to play.

Like a script that keeps on repeating, the Blue Raiders had the answer once again with a 17-12 run to take a 67-57 lead with under four minutes to play. Scott was the catalyst, ripping off back-to-back dunks off of Eagle turnovers to help avoid giving up the lead for the first time in the game.

The rest of the game turned into a free-throw contest and Lindsey Wilson came out the winner, hitting 71.9 percent for the game and knocking down 18 attempts in the second half. The Eagles finished 8-for-12 from the stripe in the second frame. - Chris Wells

Mr. Cloyd Lacy ran the Russell Springs Western Auto

Almost anything was tucked away "somewhere in the back" - JIM

By Jim

Mr. Cloyd Lacy opened the Western Auto Store on the lower end of Main Street in Russell Springs in the early 1940s. He ran the store for over 50 years, closing the doors forever in the mid-1990s. Whether you needed an odd-sized bolt, a crosscut saw, a shiny new Western Flyer bike, or a set of points for a '39 Olds, Mr. Lacy almost certainly had it, oft-times tucked away "somewhere in the back." --Jim

Remembering Paul: An artist. A master craftsman

He was a true wordsmith. Paul Hayes was a master craftsman at his chosen profession
__________

The service for Paul B. Hayes (photo, left) is at 1pmCT, today, Friday, December 7, 2012, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY. The traditional quiet reserved for services for one of his stature fell over the town before noon, today. - EW

By Mike Watson

He was an artist. Paul Hayes was a master craftsman when it came to his chosen profession. Much like a master cabinet maker can choose a tree in the woods, follow it from stump to plank, then, as if by magic, turn that into a fine piece of furniture that any discerning person would want to grace their home.

Paul could take any piece of information and turn it into a great piece of journalism. Many were the time he and I would talk for a minute or two, often amid a throng of people, then later he would have an item in his column, or as a separate story, referencing our conversation, all without making a single note. He was a true wordsmith in that respect.

I shall miss Paul and, in particular, his support and inspiration, for I often lagged in enthusiasm with my weekly column, but he could prod me on as few others have been able to do. Rest in Peace Paul. - MW

Rickie Williams finds clues in Go Ye Photo

Rickie Williams writes:
I think the answer to the "What was the occasion?" question is going to be connected to the clothes the ladies are wearing. If you notice, ALL of the ladies are dressed relatively the same...except the one standing at the right end of the back row.

She is wearing a fancy gown/dress unlike any of the others. If you blow up the picture, she also has flowers in her hair, but there is no wedding ring.

Maybe this will trigger someone's memory as to the occassion.
