Making Adair Co. better: One garden at a time

2012-05-26 - Miller Avenue & Holloway Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
Just a few years ago, was the scene of an incipient Grand Canyon, which given a few hundred billion years, could have cut through Lindsey Hill and wiped out the Fairgrounds. But a grant and expertise from the PRIDE organization tamed the run off and made a place of beauty - with the aid of the Bridge Building/Campus Path construction department at Lindsey Wilson Plant Operations just around the corner. On the day this was taken, Biology Department Professor Dr. Mike Bosela can't be seen for the telephone pole running a small garden tiller adding another garden spot to the area. But he was there. -EW

Search vexes reader, igniting frantic photo search for calf in car

Since receiving the letter below, which reveals the need for another expensive round of site upgrades to our searches, the staff of CM has been diligently searching until the request- For what turns out to be Larry Smith's picture of a calf in a car at Green River Plaza in Campbellsville, KY - was found. Finally, the search is over. The link and the picture follows this letter.

I am a big fan of ColumbiaMagazine! I live in Louisville but am proud that my family has lived in Adair County for over 200 years, Visiting this website keeps me in touch with my past and my heritage, and I thank you for it.

I am requesting assistance in locating a photo from a mid-2011 edition of the magazine. The photo is of a young calf standing in the backseat and looking out the window of a parked car, I believe the caption states the photo was taken at a store parking lot in Campbellsville. I have been unsuccessful in locating it in the Photo Archive based on my searches. I would be very appreciative if you could send me a link to the photo.

Kudos for Jim: Well done

Ann Curtis writes:
And kudos to Jim for his "sketch" of the original Adair County "Sketcher," Judge Baker!I believe what was written of Judge Baker could also apply to Jim: There's"no greater service a person could render the county in which he lived, than to record the events which should be accurately transmitted to future generations." I would further add that Jim's bringing these records back to life and re-interpreting them for a present generation is also a great service."Well done, thou good and faithful servant." ~AHC --Ann Curtis

Holiday weekend message from Linda Waggener

Linda Waggener writes:
Scrolling through the Veterans' names and missing so many - especially two close Veterans I admired so much, my dad Earl Reid Marcum and brother in law L.G. Peanut McKinley. I found the link to the essay by Dakota Meyer, Action, not words for Memorial Day 2012 and was filled with pride again for his work fighting for honor of all Veterans, and for remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for USA freedom. If Dad and Peanut were here, they'd be saying, "you tell 'em, Dakota! Keep writing, keep speaking out for Veterans!" Remembering and honoring my special Veterans and all who served. -Linda Waggener

KY 1538 now honors First Lieutenant Eric D. Yates

By Chris Jessie
News from the Kentucky Transportation Department

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (May 25, 2012) - The family of First Lieutenant Eric D. Yates unveiled a sign naming KY 1538 (known as St. John Church Road) in his honor on Friday, May 25, 2012. Lieutenant Yates of the 101st Airborne died in the line of duty in 2010. State Senator, Dennis Parrett along with Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials coordinated the event.

Before introducing Senator Parrett, KYTC District 4 Chief Engineer, Patty Dunaway stated, "I can not think of a more appropriate way to begin the Memorial Day Weekend."

Speaking to the Yates family during the ceremony Senator Parrett said, "This designation is very fitting because Eric grew up on St. John Church Road, went to church on St. John Church Road and is buried at St. John Church Cemetery."

After the unveiling, around 20 members of the family gathered for photographs beside the new sign located at the intersection of KY 1538 and KY 1600. A sign is also located at the western end of KY 1538, at the intersection of KY 1357.

The signs are a result of legislation during the recent general session to designate KY 1538 in Hardin County as the "First Lieutenant Eric D. Yates Memorial Highway. - Chris Jessie

Old Church Bell guards another piece of Nazarene history

About: The rest of the story of Church of Nazarene Church Bell

By Nicole Legg

Here's some information from the church dedication bulletin in December 1973:
"On October 10, 1923, The Church of the Nazarene was organized in Columbia, KY, by the Reverend J.W. Montgomery as District Superintendent. Reverend Eckhart was the first pastor of the church.

"The old building which was bought in 1924 from the Church of the United Brethren in Christ burned down in 1947. The block building at 308 Jamestown St. was built and dedicated in 1948 with the Reverend Robert Altman as minister."
