History: Farmers Bank of Cane Valley, Tampico Lodge

Click on headline for item with photo(s)
2012 Adair Genealogy & History Book Fair

By Historians Mike Watson and his cousin JIM

The Farmers' Bank of Cane Valley was organized in 1906 with a capital stock of $15,000 and opened its doors for business on Wednesday, January 2nd, 1907 in a just-completed building, "a two-story brick, 24 x 46 feet," erected by Mr. Robert Casey at an estimated cost of $3,000.

The original bank officers were S.G Banks, President; F.P. Rice, VicePresident; and O.W. McAlllister, Cashier. The bank closed in September 1910, a victim of the "panic" (recession) of 1910-11. It reopened in 1919 and closed its doors forever in January, 1941.

The stairs shown in the accompanying photo led (in later years) to the TampicoLodge meeting hall.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Ponder anew. A sonnet

Poetry by Robert Stone: Ponder anew. A sonnetPonder anew- a sonnet reflecting on the life of Herschel Ponder as told through his WWII memoir - Robert Stone : 20 May 2012
One grows into the circles near at hand
where friends and family will often touch
the needs unstated as one's views expand
while yet to ponder innocence not much.

One changes in an instant near at heart
when fate reduces possibility
of safety as one's world is torn apart
while one can ponder but agility.

One yields to troubled silence near at tongue
when usefulness must take another shape
to steady solving problems from high strung
while ponder thankfulness helps soothe past scrape.

A void is always just within one's view
wherein to ponder emptiness anew.

- Robert Stone, 20 May 2012

Tribute to Geraldine Smith, from Columbia Walmart co-worker

Chris Morrison writes:
She was a wonderful person. I worked with her at Walmart for years, until i got breast cancer and had to be off myself - with all my treatments and doctors visits, blood work and being sick.

But she was going through a lot, battling cancer herself. There was not a time that we got to talk while at Walmart but that she'd always ask and was concerned about me and how I was getting along.Knowing she was fighting the same battle I was, I was always concerned about her; we kept up with each other's health status. Geraldine Smith will be greatly missed; she was a very sweet person May she go to be with God; my prayers go out for her family.Geraldine Smith's Columbia Walmart friend, Chris Morrison
