Nominations sought for 2012 Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame

118 have been honored to date. In the Civil Rights Hall of Fame, people of all races are honored. Blacks, Latinos, Caucasians - the latter including President Lincoln, Pewee Reese, and John G. Fee, founder of Berea, KY, and Berea College. Many believe Adair County's Santa Fee Baptist Church may have been named for him. Another local tie who's already honored is the late Senator Dee Huddleston, brother of Virginia Van Zant and the late Attorney Earl Huddleston. The deadline for nominations is June 15, 2012. We hope a hero of civil rights will be nominated from Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell or Taylor County. For sure, there were heroes, black and white, in the integration of Adair County Schools. It's quite a story, with some still surprising 'secrets' including who really led the local effort, and a lawyer who worked quietly to get the Adair County School Board to do the right thing.(I think I know the basic story, want to write it, but have never been able to put it together. I hoping someone else who is far better qualified will do so, possibly for nominatons. - Ed Waggener)

News from the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights

The Kentucky Commission on Human Rights is accepting nominations for the 2012 Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame now through June 15, 2012.

The commission will hold the inductions ceremony in October this year in Louisville, KY.

The Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame was initiated in 2000 to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights, which is now 52 years old, and is the state authority that enforces the Kentucky Civil Rights Act. Since 2000, the commission has held intermittent inductions to its Hall of Fame to honor Kentucky men and women who have helped achieve or further civil rights and improve the lives of people that laws against discrimination protect.
