Richard Durham: The essence of living as a Christian servant

He was a man "ahead of his time" in terms of his understanding of the power and use of the internet for Christian ministries and missions...He traveled throughout Kentucky and beyond and touched lives in the name of Jesus Christ - many of whom would never have been touched by the Gospel message except through the outreach of CMA . . . Richard's ministry with the Vision Riders Chapter of the Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA). . Richard, along with Deacon Mike Forbis of Saloma Baptist Church, coordinated the Sunday ministry at Green River Lake State Park for around 13-14 years...Richard will be missed, but we rejoice in his eternal homegoing! - JOHN E. CHOWNING

By Rev. John E. Chowning
Richard Durham's pastor at Saloma Baptist Church

Thank you for sharing the letter that Richard Durham had sent to Pastor Gerald Reliford. I read it early Tuesday, December 13, just before I did final preparation for Richard's memorial service that was held this morning at Parrott-Ramsey Funeral Home in Campbellsville. Then this evening, I saw the photo of the large number of motorcycles that were parked in preparation for a very long processional from the funeral home to the Saloma Cemetery for the burial. There was a very large crowd at the funeral and burial as well as for the time of fellowship at Saloma Baptist Church.

Mill Lot childhood friend very special memory

Billy Whitlock, a neighbor, escorted him to his first day of school at Columbia Grade Center

Charles E Johnson writes:
I was sorry to see on my computer that my very good childhood friend, Billy, had passed on. Billy was the one who took me to school on my first day at the old Columbia Grade Center which is now long gone. It has been many years since I had seen or heard from Billy, but I have never forgotton him.

My parents and I lived just across the street from him and his parents in what was called the Mill Lot. I lived in a big two story yellow house which is probably gone now, too. Well, I just wanted to touch base with some of his family and say he was a very good friend and often thought of him.

So I will just say have a Happy Birthday with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ while you are resting in His arms on December 1. May God bless and comfort all of you and you are in my prayers. In His Name, Rev. Charles Johnson

ACES Christmas Program rescheduled to start earlier today

By Robbie Harmon

I just wanted to send a quick reminder about our Christmas Play today at Adair County Elementary School. The program will consist of songs performed by our students in preschool, kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades. There are also several of our 6th grade students with speaking parts.

There has been a small change in the start time. The start time has been changed as things are running a little longer than we expected. The play will begin at 12:30pmCT, Tuesday, December 13, 2011, instead of 1pmCT. Sorry for the late notice on the change but we feel that starting at 12:30 gives us more time for the entire performance.

We would like to invite parents, family and friends out for a great performance.

Thanks and we hope to see you this afternoon.

Adair County Elementary School is located at 870 Indian Drive. The performance will take place in the gymnasium. -Robbie Harmon

Grateful to Pastor Reliford for sharing Richard Durham story

Linda Waggener writes:
Dear Pastor Gerald Reliford, thank you for the blessing you provided Ed and me this morning by sharing the words of Richard Durham after he visited your church. I had already glimpsed his legacy through Rev. John Chowning, Richard's pastor at Saloma Baptist Church near Campbellsville. Rev. Chowning said yesterday that Richard was a inspirational, tireless servant of the Lord. Today, as I work, my thoughts will be with the Saloma family and with the multitudes who are grieving the tremendous loss of Richard Durham.

In gratitude,
Linda

Christmas Story: And your 50 cents

The following is an affirmation by a young girl of around nine or tento her Grandmother Etna McCaffree reporting on the Christmas gifts ofthe day. It is a favorite in the Waggener family. -EW
Columbia, Ky.
Dec. 30, 1943

Dear Granny,

How are you. We're fine. What did you get for Christmas?

The baby got two rattles and two bibs, and your 50 cents.

Eddie got a little rocking chair, a little brown and white deer, andlittle color book and Mother Goose books and your half dollar.

Annette got a little black board and two boxes chalk, gloves, pajamiesand 30 cents in her stocking and your 50 cents and some little books.

Fay got 20 cents in the stocking and a pair of p.j.s and a book, hairclasps, two games and your 50 cents.

My Sunday School teacher gave me a small set (perfume-powder) CaraNome. I got a diary from a girl at school.

We all got some candy from Santa Claus.

Thank you very much for your present to us.

Your grandchildren,
Helen Fay Waggener
Eddie
Annette
A note: 50 cents may not seem a lot today, but in the middle of World War II it was a fortune for a child. In today's money, it would be well over $6. And that might not seem like a lot unless one can imagine what life was like for a widow in that time. Granny had little in material things. She had a big peppermint stick she carried from child's house to child's house to share with grandchildren. That and wonderful stories to fascinate three little boys - Ralph Roy, Bobby Chelf, and me - about the huge catfish caught at Milltown, about hoop snakes and glass snakes, about how terrible Mickey, the next door cat was, when he raided the baby jay's nest in "her" maple tree, which she could look down on from her second story room. She was so precious to the younger ones in our family, because she was the only grandparent we knew. My Chelf grandparents Lee Roy Chelf and Annetta (Nettie) Spurling Chelf, and my grandfather R. A. Waggener, were gone before we were born. -EW

Richard Durham and his remarkable testimony at New Life

Everyone who knew Richard Durham grieves his loss profoundly. Those who did not know this joyous Christian will likely understand the depth of his acquaintances' sadness after reading Richard Durham's own spellbinding story of his visit and testimony at New Life for the Nations in Columbia, KY. For sure, those who did not know him personally will be newly inspired by his story and those who knew him well will add the story to hundreds of other similar ones they could tell. Dr. Gerald Reliford, Columbia, KY, sent this article at 3:44amCT this morning, Tuesday, December 13, 2011. The article was written by Richard Durham while he was President of the Christian Motorcycle Association, when members of the CMA visited New Life for the Nations, and Richard Durham received a surprise and the congregation a blessing none there would never forget. It's a broad insight into a life South Central Kentucky would do well to remember forever. -EW

A blessing from Richard Durham to New Life

I was about the last one of our crew to arrive at New Life and Tim ushered us in just as the Praise and Worship services were getting underway. They have a great Praise and Worship team and from the moment they started you could feel the presence of the Holy Spirit this morning.

As I was getting used to the service I noticed the guy in front of me on the first row had no right hand.

The Good Old Days: Christmas growing up in Adair Co., KY

Her father always got his tobacco crop ready for the first sale, so he could work at the tobacco warehouse in Greensburg and earn extra money for Christmas. Back then, Christmas wasn't an overload of toys. In fact, toys weren't given in her family.. It was more about needed school clothing or special holiday foods: Bananas and oranges, and Christmas candy! But it still made the holidays her favorite season. The best advice that her Mother always gave her, "If you give with a free heart, it will come back tenfold." And that's the way she enjoys Christmas today: Giving, anticipating the joy on others faces when they unwrap her presents.
