Farm Service Agency News/Acreage reports deadline July 15, 2011

By Tony Corbin

The Farm Service Agency reminds farmers the deadline is fast approaching for filing crop acreage reports. Acreage reports are required for many Farm Service Agency programs. Acreage reports are needed to maintain eligibility for Price Support loans, the Noninsured Crop Assistance Program (NAP) and the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). The final date to report all crops, except small grains and certain NAP crops is July 15.

Reports filed after the reporting deadline are subject to a late reporting fee. Please remember that filing an accurate acreage report, including failed acreage and prevented planting acreage, can prevent the loss of benefits for a variety of programs.

For more information or to file an acreage report visit the local FSA office at 961 Campbellsville RD, Columbia, KY or call us at (270) 384-6431 or 1-888-758-6634. -Tony Corbin

Governor says revenue increases are clear sign of recovery

From Gov. Steve Beshear's Communications Office

FRANKFORT, KY -"While the economic picture remains challenging for our families and our businesses, we are continuing to see clear signs of economic recovery. This kind of growth in business taxes means firms are returning to profitability - and hopefully more of them will soon begin reinvesting in new jobs. This revenue report offers additional hope that the revenue outlook for next fiscal year may improve beyond budgeted levels as well.

"No matter what the revenue reports may say, though, I remain committed to steady and measured budgeting that maintains critical services for our citizens. I have rebalanced the budget nine times, cutting more than $1 billion while protecting our highest priorities - education, public safety and job creation. While I am pleased with the revenue report, we still have work to do to help our families weather the lingering effects of the economic downturn. Attracting and maintaining jobs remains my top priority."

Whitehurst Diaries: Sunflowers are opening in Heat wave

Sunflowers, cherished by her Grampa Mac in Vermont and thriving plants in the high desert of her gardenless Wyoming, are bursting forth in full glory now in this torrid July of Gradyville, KY
Click on headline for story plus photo(s)

By Sharon Whitehurst

Sunflowers have begun to open in the heat wave.

The small, many branched natives were one of the few flowers which could thrive in the heat of Wyoming's high desert, sprawling along the dusty edges of a tarred road; during our dozen gardenless years there my appreciation was deepened for a plant I have always enjoyed.

5Ws Checklist: Who? What? Where? Why? When?

Everyone saves time if the 30 second checklist to see if the announcement answers the Five Ws questions before clicking "SEND."And remember, for CM, Events aren't posted without Street & Street Number for venues

Save time: suggestion for posts of events, classified ads, and news items?

Got an email recently with a note, "Please add telephone number to my ad."

Fortunately, it had the Classified Ad ID, which lets us go to the ad in seconds.

Unfortunately, for the second time, the telephone number was not included.

Unfortunately, for the second time, there was no email address to contact the advertiser.

It Saves Time for You, too, to run the checklist: Remember the checklist before clicking "Send," and see if the 5Ws - Who? What? Why? Where? When? -questions are answered. And remember, CM's main raison d'etre is to help people Save Time, and have more time to enjoy this wonderful community. That's why Events always have times, days of week, dates, and location with Street Number and Addresses. To save everyone time. -EW

Mind is boggled by attitudes of home owners toward trees

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
It continues to boggle my mind that folks will spend thousands of dollars annually to maintain a lawn that they can replace in two weeks for a couple hundred bucks but will not spend a couple hundred bucks every year or two to correctly prune, crown thin and maintain trees in their home landscapes that take decades and thousands of dollars to replace. - Billy Joe Fudge
