Question: What does it mean to hat rack a tree?

What does it mean to "hat rack" a tree? - Wendy Butler Burt
That's a question for Barbara Armitage and M.E. Lewis or Billy Joe Fudge. We do have a photo of a typical hat racked tree, but no explanation as to why it's called that. -EW

A typical hat racked tree

2011-07-09 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Innocent Bystander.
Wendy Burt wants an explanation of what is meant by the term "to hat rack a tree." Here a photo of a typical one, but the explanation of why it's called that would have to come from someone with more tree knowledge, like B.J. Fudge, M.E. Lewis, or Barbara Armstrong.

Charles Sparks and The Band of Brothers

Firemen who were in the cortege bringing Charles Sparks home for his final call choke with emotion describing the outpouring of emotion, the show of respect by communities all along the path. It is described by one, below, and it gives an insight to the rest of us what it means to be a part of this Band of Brothers, this very special group of Adair Countians.

By Ralph Roy Waggener

Charles Sparks grew up in and around the Adair Co. Volunteer Department almost all his life. His Father Charles was a member most of his life; I don't know how long - but as long as I can remember.

This father son team worked together I believe for a short time as firemen until senior Charles decided to retire from fighting fires. This is almost a tradition in this Volunteer fire dept. several other have followed their fathers into service.

Rescue Mission Complete: Family is back home

When the Downtown Redbuds got hat racked Friday, a family of robins were homeless. But a call to action and a quick response from Mother Melewi (aka M.E. aka Maury Lewis) and her intrepid band of first responders rescued the birds, now back in their rehabbed, makeshift home. But the fight for survival is not over. Everyone is asked to help out. Scare off predators. And maybe help the mama with some juicy worms. And say a kind word as they pass.

By An Innocent Bystander

Maury Lewis better known as "melewi" locally responded to an urgent call today from a group of concerned shop owners on the downtown square. It seems that during Friday's unfortunate "hat racking" of the Red Buds on the Square a nest of young Robins was left homeless. Their nest knocked from the tree, the helpless babies survived the fall to the ground but would have surely perished except for the kindness of strangers. Quick action by the shop owners provided temporary shelter for the night but it was soon clear that mama Robin was having difficulty feeding her young.

This plant is a Phlox. You used to see these a lot when I was growing up in gardens and in flower gardens. I had not seen these in such a long time. They are beautiful when in full bloom. This variety comes in lavender and pink. There is a Phlox-David which is white and it is stunning. -Sheila Hare

Charles Sparks was true friend and hero

I have never met a person more dedicated to helping others without any thoughts of reward or recognition.
Obituary: Charles (Sparky) Sparks, Adair Co., KY (1961-2011)

By Eric Goodin

I will always remember Charles as a true friend and hero. So many nights growing up as we played basketball in my driveway and when that alarm went off he was faster than anyone to get there to help whomever needed him at that time.

I admired Charles for his dedication, caring, and tireless efforts to always be there if at all possible to all that needed him.

From the Farm at Tucker's Station, Bull Run RD, Columbia, KY

Going to the Farmer's Market on Saturday morning has always been a part of my life so I for one am delighted with the new hours for the Adair County Farmer's Market. I didn't want to miss anything so I made sure that I arrived early. At 7:45 the farmer's were adding the final touches to their booths, at 8:00 the first customers started to arrive and by 8:15 the joint was hoppin' - yes I'd say that the Saturday Farmers Market is off to a fast start.

Kentucky Color: Rose of Sharon, indeed

Click on headline for photos of two contenders for honored name
To see the next earlier Kentucky Color, click to Kentucky Color - Cedar Eggs

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Department of Forestry

As a duly unlicensed investigator I must bring to your attention a vast and pervasive fraud that is being perpetrated by the Worldwide Plant Police.

In order to get this important information to you I hope to avoid clandestine censorship authorities by not expounding upon any personal beliefs. I sincerely believe you will arrive at the same conclusion at which I have arrived.

That conclusion simply stated is "There is a Rose of Sharon identity theft taking place by another foreign invader from Southeast Asia."

After reviewing the evidence I should hope that a grass-roots movement will arise to facilitate correct labeling in our public discourse.
