Two great Churchill Downs photos from Jamie Harper White

Jamie Harper White, daughter of James and Donna Harper of Columbia, KY, shares two great photos from the November 2010 Breeders Cup.

One shows the horses coming around the first turn with the Twin Spires in the background. It's as breathtaking as any front page Derby Day full color photo the Courier-Journal ever published, we think.

The other is of the winner of the Juvenile Race winner, Uncle Mo and jocky John Velazquez. The horse, at the time, was the 2011 Derby Favorite.

Medal of Honor Winner Spurrier from WV, after all

Jim wishes with all his heart that Medal of Honor winner Junior Spurrier was actually a Russell County, Kentuckian, as the Medal of Honor Archives says, but a search of the records proves otherwise. However, Spurrier's story and his exploits, near to or surpassing those of the much more famous Audie Murphy, is compelling reading

By "Jim"

As a native of Russell County, Ky., and as a nephew, cousin, and acquaintance of several men who served in World War II, I would be proud beyond all words if Russell County could claim as one of her own a Medal of Honor winner.

Simply put, however, she can't.

Learning more about Little Brown Birds/Sparrows

Getting Ready for the Great Backyard Bird Count, and last presently scheduled pre-GBBC February 18, 19, 20, 21, 2011.Click on headline for story with CM Birds of Kentucky Sparrow Album. Nine local photos, and adding. And plea for photographers to share missing ones

Special CM Story

There seems to be a much higher interest in Sparrows, and respect for, "Little Brown Birds" in preparation for the Great Backyard Bird Count. Usually, All About Birds carries the best information any species. And there is great information at the website.

But there's a chart on the Kenyon.edu website which makes identification of sparrows easier. Here's the link: Sparrows: more than just "little brown birds"The chart shows the Song Sparrow, Field Sparrow, Tree Sparrow, House Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, and the somewhat similar White-Crowned and White-Throated Sparrow.

The Legacy of a Spider: Aurantia Argiope

Still settling in at Gradyville, KY, Vermonter Sharon Whitehurst shares her diary of life-cycle of an Adair County favorite and a Gradyville icon, the Garden Spider, or Aurantia Argiope. The spider is revered in these parts, one many already call the Adair County National Spider. (Though there are factions of Wolf Spider and Four-eyed Jumping Spider advocates.). This is the story of living and dying, of sisterhood, of adaptive reuse, and the continuity of life

By Sharon Whitehurst

On August 15, 2010, enjoying the early morning sun on our east-facing porch, my eye was caught by the web of a large spider. The anchoring lines of the web were attached to a pillar of the porch while the orb itself was suspended in a clump of overgrown sedum and liriope.

Remembering Barbara Booher: Met friend when both at WRH

Alice Wheeler writes:
I officially met Barbara (Booher) a year ago 2009. We were roommates at Westlake Regional Hospital. Both of us were very ill.

I have never meet a nicer lady than Barbara, or a nicer group than her family. When they visited Barbara they visited me. Her family prayed for us, brought us goodies, and kept us uplifted for seven full days.

We watched a lot of TV and had long talks about our families, friends, and our Savior. She sure was proud of her family and loved them so much.

We actually only live one street apart, but had never met until 2009.

We became very good friends and kept check on one another with frequent phone calls.

I will miss my friend, but I'm happy to know that she is now with her husband in Heaven. My deepest sympathy to her family, who sure had an awesome Mother. -Alice Wheeler
