The Heat: Trees Good, Blacktop Bad

2010-07-07 - Photo by Ed Waggener. Fortune Street Shade, Municipal Parking Lot at E. Fortune and S. Reed Streets, Columbia, KY
In the shade of the knot hole in a water maple, the temperature was 88.9 F. On a gravel driveway, with full sun, the temperature was 92.1 F. On the nearly empty Municipal Parking Lot at Reed and Fortune Street, the heat island temperature was an unbearable 123-124 F. The readings were taken within 15 minutes from start to finish. If you think it is hotter in Downtown Columbia than it used to be, you are probably right! While the instrument above isn't perfect, it does give relative readings which show the oven we've blacktopped ourselves into - never mind the flooding it creates in downpours.

The Hills still own, operate Hardscratch General Store

Confusement may have been created by the fact that, in a moment of near lunacy, Ken Hill did negotiate on the sale of the store. And he did sell a piece of property toward Columbia from the store. But he did not sell Hardscratch General Store. The store now has near Air Conditioning. Fish will be frying Friday night, July 9, 2010, as usual.

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Help me dispel a myth and rumor.

Many folks think I sold the store.

I was in negotiations for a sale, but then I realized I just couldn't bring myself to part with it. Jake and Vickie were as relieved as anyone.

Noodling, pond fishing, Canada geese on KY Afield

By Scott Moore
News from the KY Fish & Wildlife Department

If you can't make a trip to Kentucky's larger lakes or streams, then great fishing is still waiting at a nearby farm pond. You'll see that story and more on "Kentucky Afield" television this weekend, July 10 and 11, 2010.

There's great bass fishing at farm ponds

From his cell phone, a private land owner showed our host, Tim Farmer, a snapshot of an 8-pound largemouth bass caught the previous week. That was incentive enough to grab some gear and remember the value of farm pond fishing. Often dismissed because of small size or lack of scenic beauty, a well-balanced pond packs plenty of excitement. We go to Fayette County for the proof.
