Six die on Kentucky roadways

b>News from Kentucky State Police, Frankfort, KY

Frankfort, KY - Preliminary statistics* indicate that six people died in six separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, April 12 through Sunday, April 18, 2010.

Three of the crashes involved motor vehicles and one of those victims was not wearing a seat belt. The seat belt status of one victim is unknown. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Barren, Taylor and Webster counties. The suspected use of alcohol was a factor in the Barren County crash.

Cubscout Troop 888, Columbia, Adair Co., KY held its Pinewood Derbyon Saturday, April 17, 2010, Adair County Middle School Gym.

The top winners were:

City awarded RDA funds to buy trucks for Sanitation Dept.

The City of Columbia has been awarded an $81,400 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development office to purchase two new trucks for the Citys Sanitation Department.

The funds awarded today will be used to purchase a new International garbage truck and a 2010 Chevy 2500 HD truck to be used by the City of Columbia Sanitation Department to provide more efficient waste disposal service in the city. The award was announced by Rep. Ed Whitfield (KY-01).

April 19-May 9, 2010 General Turkey Season Photo Album

Hunters in Green County have harvested the most turkeys in the ColumbiaMagazine.com coverage area, with 171 reported as of 7:56amCT, Monday, April 19, 2010.

Turkey hunting season is in full swing now, and here's how the hunt looks in the Seven County ColumbiaMagazine.com area:

Brian Gray from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife join us with a slide presentation about birding in this area. It should be an interesting evening.

Russell Co. shows 20% census participation gain in decade

Mail in phase is over. Next the door-to-door head count will begin

Russell Countians showed the greatest gain in mail-in U.S. Census participation, as reported thus far at 6amCT, Monday, April 19, 2010, of any county in the Seven County ColumbiaMagazine area.

In 2000, only 56% of Russell Countians used the mail in form, but in 2010, that number has swelled to 74%, a gain of 18%.

Here's how the gains in the decade looked for all the Seven Counties at 6amCT this morning:
  • Russell Co., KY 56 to 74%, a gain of 18%
  • Cumberland Co., KY, 57% to 71%, a gain of 14%
  • Metcalfe Co., KY, 62% to 76%, a gain of 14%
  • Casey Co.,, KY, 60% to 72%, a gain of 12%
  • Adair Co., KY, 68 to 76%, a gain of 8%
  • Green Co., KY, 75% to 80%, a gain of 5%
  • Taylor Co., KY, 73% to 77%, a gain of 4%
  • State of KY, 70% to 72%, a gain of 2%
  • National, 72% to 69%, a loss of 3%, thus far

The next Adair County Bird Watchers meeting is at 6pm CT, Monday, April 19, 2010at the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service, 409 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY. Brian Gray from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, will join us to talk about bird watching in Kentucky. I expect he'll share several "secrets" about bird watching in this area as he manages the 20,000 acre Green River Lake Wildlife Management Area.
