Whether Cumberland is Big River depends

BJ Fudge: Cumberland is big river owing to where you are whether the Cumberland is a Big River. The tiny stream does become a Big River, Fudge concludes, only after the vast volumes from the mighty Powell's Creek, Harrod's Fork, and Little Renox watersheds pour into it
About: Scenic Cumberland Co., KY: Cold cold river water

By B.J. Fudge

After convening a meeting of the left and right sides of my brain I have concluded that both Mr. Oakes and the Triad of Geographic Academia were correct.

The Local Linguist: A question for the grammar gurus

Correct Russell Countyese pronounciation is thoed; it should be thoed rolls; but try showing that to some mule-headed Missourians-CM

By Jim

Upon reading your comment about Lambert's throwed rolls, I sensed a niggling question forming, one that will give me no rest until asked (and hopefully answered by those who have a greater command of the Mother Tongue than do I).

Is throwed more properly pronounced throwed or thoed? (Please - no apostrophes need apply.)

We denizens of the the greater Dent, Ky. area (including the entirety of East Montpelier and the lion's share of Esto) always said thoed and considered it Gospel pure.

However, having spent my later years amongst the Yankee-speakers, far from the hills and hollows of my misspent youth, I find myself wondering if perhaps that were idiomatic to the specific locale mentioned.

Can - will - anyone help me out here?

Nugget of Information: Moss Homeplace Farm in 3 counties

The Adair, Green, and Metcalfe County lines converged on the Moss Homeplace

By Phil Coffey

I thought you might like this little nugget of information: Mom's (nee Venie Moss) and Uncle Doc's (V.O. Moss) homeplace (farm) was located in Adair, Metcalfe and Green counties.

Their father, John Marshall Moss, was born in1881 in the same house as all ten of his children.

The Moss family was in the area before Adair and Metcalfe were formed.
Wonderful information! Thanks for sharing. And an online question: Is the house still standing? -CM

Lamberts Cafe is in Sikeston, MO

Ed,

One of the rules in going to Lambert's Cafe (http://www.throwedrolls.com/) is to be HUNGRY; however, it is not located in the 'Bluff. It is located in Sikeston, Scott County, MO. The springs at Van Buren feed Current River and keep it a cool 65 degrees, even during the hot summer, all the way to the Arkansas line. Many people take "float trips" of various lengths and sizes of groups.

s/Jeff Johnson

Humble apologies to everybody from the Boot Hill to Cape Girardeau and West, especially Sikeston, MO. The caption is changed. Thanks for clarifying and thanks for the warning that one needs to be a Good Eater to get through one of the huge meals at Lambert's. We also throwed in a correction on what's throwed: Rolls, not biscuits. -EW
