Midwest Conference Cycling Road Race 2010:
Little Cake behind them

2010-03-06 - Little Cake, First District, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Wendy Gousha. "These elite cyclists conquered one of the two hills on Little Cake Road. This one being the smallest of the two. We enjoyed supporting their efforts and pushing them on toward their finish. Their hardest challenge was the final hill and longest climb on Little Cake before heading to the finish line. We wish these cyclists the best and hope their journey was a successful one." Wendy Gousha writes. Little Cake Christian Church can be seen in the upper right hand corner behind the cyclists.

Craycraft, Adair Co. KY: Near Oak Grove, Ozark, New Concord

Earlier article: Wonders about exact location of Craycraft, Adair Co., KY

By E.H. Lepiarczyk II

Craycraft is a community very near Oak Grove, Ozark, and New Concord.

Although all of my grandfather and grandmother's sons and daughters were born at Concord, their birth certificates indicate they were born at Craycraft and Garlin.

Concord did not have a post office. Craycraft's post office was discontinued and citizens of the Concord community largely used the Garlin post office for mail deliveries when my mother was growing up in the 1930s and 1940s.

Concord became known as New Concord after the Concord School closed in the early 1950s.

My grandfather, the late Daniel Marion Grider, was a rural mail carrier who delivered mail from the Craycraft post office.

Many of my relatives lived in the Craycraft community including members of the Samuel Dowell Pierce family.

The former Murrell family residence is one of the most prominent landmarks of the Craycraft commuity today.

During my mother's generation many Craycraft community children attended Oak Grove School or Concord School in communities near Craycraft. -E.H. Lepiarczyk II

Scenic Old Houses: Walter Murrell house holds happy memories

About: Scenic Old House Series: Murrell House at Craycraft, Adair Co., KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

My mother, Katherine Louise Grider Lepiarczyk, has fond memories visiting the Murrell family residence during her childhood.

Mother's classmate and friend, Janet Louise Murrell Hayes, grew up in this lovely home.

Mom and Janet graduated from Concord School and began their Columbia High School days together as members of the Class of 1952!

Members of my family all remember that the Murrell family residence was one of the most beautiful homes in the Craycraft community.

Thank you for presenting a treasured landmark of the Craycraft community on Adair County's premiere ColumbiaMagazine.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: A clearer picture on budget bill

House on path to raise revenue through adjusting existing tax code statutes, a disappointment to Representative Carney

By State Representative Bam Carney

Each even-year session ushers in the time for legislators to craft a two-year spending plan to guide our Commonwealth. My colleagues and I hoped this year would provide the opportunity for a budget to be crafted in a bi-partisan manner, satisfying the needs of Kentucky in a fiscally sensible manner. Now, with less than a month remaining in the 2010 Regular Session, I was disappointed to see the Democrat proposal of raising taxes through House Bill 530.

Diner News: Election Talk Creeping Into Conversations . . .

Common sense may come back into play in the upcoming elections, and that can be uncomfortably frightening

John E. Moss, Jamestown, Russell County, KY

At the Manners Diner on Monument Square there are still lingering thoughts on the wet/dry vote reversal. Most of the conjecture tends to be on who will be suing whom and who may or may not appeal the recent judicial decision.

An unnamed local source, who used to be a judge, was talking about the difference between the written law and the law as interpreted by members of the judicial system. He also, from experience, gave a brief but comprehensive dissertation about how not being able to prove 'Prior Intent' can burn your rear end in a lawsuit.

Talk at the diner is slowly turning to the coming primary election. For the most part, it is agreed that with so many candidates running in the primary for positions on the general election ballot, the old 'lesser of two evils' rule of thumb is for the most part worthless.

A newer candidate elimination system of marking off relatives, those gripped by greed, buffoonery, and the marginally qualified seemed too harsh. Implemented impartially, there were far too few candidates left to choose from.

So, it is beginning to look like common sense might have to brought into play during the election, and that can be uncomfortably frightening. But when you think . . . it does explain some of our previously elected city, county and state officials.
