The Adair County Garden Club is all aflutter over butterflies

Click on headline for full story with photo

By Barbara Armitage

The Adair County Garden Club hit the open road again last week visiting the Butterfly Habitat at Lost River Cave just outside Bowling Green, KY.

Garden Club members were reminded that butterflies add both beauty and serenity to a garden and that their natural habitats are being destroyed everyday both by deforestation and pesticides.

Butterfly gardening is easy and rewarding. Just by adding a few colorful plants to your landscape you can attract dozens of beautiful butterflies to your gardens. Try planting Bee Balm or Cone Flowers or you can sow a packet of colorful Zinnia or Comos seeds and the results will be amazing.

To learn more about Butterfly Gardening contact the Adair County Garden Club at (270) 250-2979. The Garden Club meets the 4th Thursday of each month at a variety of locations.

Carol Perkins: Sally Was a Good Girl

This short story is evocative of some W. Somerset Maugham short stories - but better. There's a moral here, and a delightful twist at the end, in this all too timely story. -EW

By Carol Perkins

Sally was a good old girl. I don't know what her family would have done without her because she took care of them all her life. She never married or had children, so what else did she have to do?

If Grandma's house needed cleaning, Sally rolled up her sleeves and scrubbed it from top to bottom. After all, she could clean better than any of her sisters. "You're so lucky to have Sally," their friends declared. "We sure are," they replied proudly.

Poem: Faint praise, a tribute to Horse Cave catalpa

Faint Praise
I think that I shall never see
catalpas solely just as trees
for white weeks closely prest
against destruction's fiery breasts
cannot forever stop the day
when beauty falls before faint praise.
But when so many years they wear
those buds and blooms and seeds for heirs,
when hope on broken branches lain
in spring revives and grabs the reigns,
then all creations made by me
seem naught by wonders of the trees.
-Robert Stone
Robert Stone wrote this poem as a tribute to the Horse Cave Catalpa Tree, and a take off on Joyce Kilmer's "I thin that I shall never see."

Tom Chaney. #207. May 31 2009: What We Need is Here

Of Writers And Their Books, Sunday, 31 May 2009: Tom Chaney Book Review #207An American Gospel , by Erik Reece. Last week's Tom Chaney commentary:So Open to Infinity

By Tom Chaney
bookstore@scrtc.com

What We Need is Here

Leo Tolstoy observed that one cannot believe in both the Sermon on the Mount and the Nicene Creed. The Sermon on the Mount begins with the beatitudes and Jesus charges his audience to "love their enemies, turn the other cheek, give to those who beg, and avoid hypocritical judgments." The Creed is an assertion of the need to escape the world through sacrifice.

Chuck Hinman No. #132 : Weaning a baby calf off its mother

IT'S JUST ME AGAIN Chuck Hinman #132, Weaning a baby calf off its mother
The next earlier Chuck Hinman story is High School Ring Reader comments to CM are appreciated, as are emails directly to Mr. Hinman at: charles.hinman@sbcglobal.net

By Chuck Hinman

I can hear you saying "DOING WHAT TO A WHAT?"

In writing my memories recently, I remembered as a little kid growing up on a Nebraska farm, weaning baby calves of dependence on the mother cow for food. A calf would still be nursing its mother as a teenager if you didn't wean them.

Vote for Field of Dreams before Church

"VOTE FOR THIS FIELD"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

From the look of the countdown clock on the Frosted Flakes website, voting ends Sunday, May 31, at noonET, 11:00amCT in Columbia. People need to vote in the morning before heading to church - the afternoon will be too late. I have alerted my circles of friends by e-mail - posting on Facebook seemed too inactive a thing to do.
