The Salatos: An old fashioned, forever kind of love

2009-03-22 - Bowling Green, KY - Photo Salato family photo.
Carol Salato Myers writes: "This is on Mom's and Daddy's wedding day which was August 11, 1943," She adds of her parents, Dr. James and Jane Salato, "They were married in Bowling Green, Kentucky. I'm not sure whose house it is," and asks, "Gosh, weren't they young looking? Mom was 19 and Daddy was 26. I always told Mom that if he had longer hair or I had shorter hair we could be twins."

Interesting item from Russell Creek Academy, 1907

By Linda Waggener

This bit of news came from a friend who researches old newspapers who shared this news from a May 28, 1907 Adair County newspaper:...from Campbellsville dated May 17, 1907:
"Thursday evening the closing exercises of the Russell Creek Baptist Academy will take place in the Chapel. This will close the first term of a school that will prove a success beyond the shadow of a doubt. Dr. Fogle, of Georgetown College will deliver an address before the Literary Society Friday evening. The public is invited to attend during both evenings. Thursday night's program program will consist of music, recitals and a debate on woman's suffrage."
The Russell Creek Baptist Academy was the forerunner of Campbellsville University. Many, including several from northern Adair County, attended high school at Russell Creek Academy.

According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, the academy was founded one year before the article above was written. Wikipedia says, "Campbellsville University was founded in 1906 by the Russell Creek Baptist Association. The current president of the university is Michael V. Carter, Ph.D."

Memories of Dr. Jimmie and Jane Salato

A letter for the people of Columbia and Adair County:
Thanks for the Memories

By Carol Salato Myers

After the death of my mother, Jane Salato, I felt compelled to reflect on not only her life but my father's as well. I found it impossible to separate them individually because they were so much a part of each other. She was the last of the doctors' wives from a bygone era.

Dr. Jeffries, Dr. Loy, Dr. Nell, and Dr. Salato were names everyone knew. The doctors were not only colleagues but friends. Those friendships remained intact throughout the years. Their wives were also a vital part of the community.

My mom used to say, "When I die, no one will come to the funeral home because Jimmie was the one they loved." I always told her that wasn't true, that Mike, Nancy, and I along with our spouses would definitely be there and maybe her grandchildren. She always got a kick out of that. Her words did not ring true as droves of people ambled down the aisle at the visitation on March 10th. For a brief moment, I looked up toward the sky and said, "Mom, you were wrong again."

Orange, CA, has roundabout, similarity to Columbia, KY

About: Hodgenville has roundabout like one in Columbia, KY

Ed,

There's also a roundabout in Orange, California, that has a fountain plaza in its center. Old Town Orange has lots of restaurants, antique shops and even an old-fashioned drugstore with soda fountain. The downtown area is within walking distance to Chapman University, similar to Columbia's and Lindsey's proximity.

s/Ann Curtis

Thanks for letting us know about this significant similarity. Maybe Orange, CA; Columbia and Hodgenville, KY, and Carmel, IN, should be sister cities. Carmel, IN, may be the tbe round-about capitol of the United States, the Amsterdam, Holland, of America. Orange, 128,000; Carmel, 37,000, and Amsterdam, 758,000, are all a little larger than Columbia and Hodgenville, though no more important, we'd think. -EW

By Chris Wells, LWC Sports Information Director

The Lindsey Wilson College softball team won their second straight with a 3-1 win today over visiting Union (Ky.) College at Joe Johnson Field, in Columbia, KY

Carol Perkins: Beech Bend Park

Carol Perkins remembers the glory days of Beech Bend Park in Bowling Green, KY. A safe place for kids, with admission only ten cents, not a whole week's paycheck to enter. A place with scary rides like the Ferris wheel, and scary thrilling rides like the Wild Mouse. A place she'd like to take her grandkids to, to consume Beech Bend the way she di many years ago.
Carol Perkins next earlier article: Skate Key

By Carol Perkins

Beech Bend Park

Beech Bend Park, just a few miles outside of Bowling Green, was my Disney World.

It came complete with a zoo, skating rink, thrill rides, an Olympic sized swimming pool, pavilions for dancing, stock car races, and tents with teddy bears and hula dolls hanging along the sides, enticing a guy to "win one for the pretty lady."

All these wonderfully exciting attractions were rolled into one grand park that didn't cost a week's paycheck to enter.

MISSING PET. REWARD
Golden Retriever missing since huge AC Animal Bust Debbie Murray fears her pet may have been in that bunch. Dog was Christmas present from husband. Reward offered for return

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

My Golden Retriever is missing and has been just before the huge Adair County Animal bust. I fear she may have been in that bunch but I have attempted to contact the shelter a number of times now with no help from them. I'm now reaching out to the public to attempt to find my baby.

She is golden in color and answers to the name baby. She has been spayed and is very friendly. A reward is offered for her return. When she disappeared she had on a two collars, one was a shock collar as she was in an underground fence which she got out of.

Please post this message and forward to any person you might find to help me bring my baby back. She was a Christmas present from my husband when my last retriever passed and is very special to me.

Thank you so much for your help!

Let Me tell you about my Grandkids: Graham reads to Granddad
OUR FIRST GRANDCHILD, GRAHAM, at left above, with my first husband Ed, shared a new book over lunch Saturday. When time is flying by and Graham and his brother Evan can't make it to Columbia at the same time the grandparents can't make it to Shelbyville, we frequently call for a meeting in the middle. This visit took us to Barnes and Noble bookstore in Elizabethtown and then across the parking lot to Red Lobster. The visit came to a close at a play place just up the road where for a small fee, kids can jump and climb and play miniature golf. Reflecting on our visit, I'm proud to say our philosophies were not compromised -- reading and discovery were celebrated first, then eating some healthy broccoli followed by physical education. It was a fine day. Graham and Evan are sons of Pen and Amy Smith Waggener of Shelbyville, Ky. -LINDA WAGGENER

Let Me tell you about my Grandkids: Evan Reads to Mema
MEMA LINDA WAGGENER is working on an advanced degree, but her level of erudition, particularly as it pertains to great literature, to Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, does not nearly reach that of her five-almost-six year old grandson Evan Waggener, a kindergartner at Southside Elementary School in Shelbyville, KY, who has a PhD equivalent in the subject But she was catching up Saturday, during a command oral reading of Rodrick Rules at Barnes & Noble in Elizabethtown, KY, on Saturday, March 21, 2009. Evan told Mema he had all the set, including the orange book, The Do-It-Yourself-Book which the bookstore didn't seem to have. A good time was had by all, during the visit, though Evan did not get to read his favorite book, Sir Fartsalot Hunts the Booger by Kevin Bolger to her. -ED WAGGENER

The band raised a little over 18k from the auction and food alone. Every dollar raised is going to help take the band to New York City for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade this year. The event was held Saturday, March 21, 2009, at the Adair County Elementary School in Columbia.

The Adair County Band organization is grateful to all those who made the auction and chili supper a huge success. We are overwhelmed by the generosity displayed by members of our community who supported us through their donations to and purchases made at the auction. Our auction raised $16, 675.00 and contributions through our chili supper totaled $1325.00.
