Interesting item from Russell Creek Academy, 1907 By Linda Waggener This bit of news came from a friend who researches old newspapers who shared this news from a May 28, 1907 Adair County newspaper:...from Campbellsville dated May 17, 1907: "Thursday evening the closing exercises of the Russell Creek Baptist Academy will take place in the Chapel. This will close the first term of a school that will prove a success beyond the shadow of a doubt. Dr. Fogle, of Georgetown College will deliver an address before the Literary Society Friday evening. The public is invited to attend during both evenings. Thursday night's program program will consist of music, recitals and a debate on woman's suffrage."The Russell Creek Baptist Academy was the forerunner of Campbellsville University. Many, including several from northern Adair County, attended high school at Russell Creek Academy. According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, the academy was founded one year before the article above was written. Wikipedia says, "Campbellsville University was founded in 1906 by the Russell Creek Baptist Association. The current president of the university is Michael V. Carter, Ph.D." 2009-03-22 17:36:48 | Comments | Printable version

Memories of Dr. Jimmie and Jane Salato Thanks for the Memories By Carol Salato Myers After the death of my mother, Jane Salato, I felt compelled to reflect on not only her life but my father's as well. I found it impossible to separate them individually because they were so much a part of each other. She was the last of the doctors' wives from a bygone era. Dr. Jeffries, Dr. Loy, Dr. Nell, and Dr. Salato were names everyone knew. The doctors were not only colleagues but friends. Those friendships remained intact throughout the years. Their wives were also a vital part of the community. My mom used to say, "When I die, no one will come to the funeral home because Jimmie was the one they loved." I always told her that wasn't true, that Mike, Nancy, and I along with our spouses would definitely be there and maybe her grandchildren. She always got a kick out of that. Her words did not ring true as droves of people ambled down the aisle at the visitation on March 10th. For a brief moment, I looked up toward the sky and said, "Mom, you were wrong again." Orange, CA, has roundabout, similarity to Columbia, KY About: Hodgenville has roundabout like one in Columbia, KY Ed, There's also a roundabout in Orange, California, that has a fountain plaza in its center. Old Town Orange has lots of restaurants, antique shops and even an old-fashioned drugstore with soda fountain. The downtown area is within walking distance to Chapman University, similar to Columbia's and Lindsey's proximity. s/Ann Curtis Thanks for letting us know about this significant similarity. Maybe Orange, CA; Columbia and Hodgenville, KY, and Carmel, IN, should be sister cities. Carmel, IN, may be the tbe round-about capitol of the United States, the Amsterdam, Holland, of America. Orange, 128,000; Carmel, 37,000, and Amsterdam, 758,000, are all a little larger than Columbia and Hodgenville, though no more important, we'd think. -EW 2009-03-22 15:02:38 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Carol Perkins: Beech Bend Park Carol Perkins remembers the glory days of Beech Bend Park in Bowling Green, KY. A safe place for kids, with admission only ten cents, not a whole week's paycheck to enter. A place with scary rides like the Ferris wheel, and scary thrilling rides like the Wild Mouse. A place she'd like to take her grandkids to, to consume Beech Bend the way she di many years ago. Carol Perkins next earlier article: Skate Key By Carol Perkins Beech Bend Park Beech Bend Park, just a few miles outside of Bowling Green, was my Disney World. It came complete with a zoo, skating rink, thrill rides, an Olympic sized swimming pool, pavilions for dancing, stock car races, and tents with teddy bears and hula dolls hanging along the sides, enticing a guy to "win one for the pretty lady." All these wonderfully exciting attractions were rolled into one grand park that didn't cost a week's paycheck to enter.
