A Thank You From the Green River Cowboys Local talent. Local success. The Re-enactment of the Jesse James Robbery of the Bank of Columbia was, for the sixth year in a row, the highlight of the entire Downtown Days festival. 2008 was no exception. Barry Jones recalls the history of the event, with special thanks to its organizer, Charles Grimsley, and its writer and narrator, Stanley Lawson; and the man in whose honor the event is held, Edgar Holmes, Jr. Now, the Green River Cowboys are featured in a movie, "Dad The Hero and the Wild Wild West" By Barry Jones Thank you Columbia for a wonderful reenactment. We had a blast with this years performance. We had more people active in the Jesse James Bank Robbery than ever before. And thanks to ColumbiaMagazine.com for fine coverage of the event. County agent thinks photo may be of Northern Water Snake About: Green River Serpent among mussel shells Ed, I don't claim to be a herpetologist, but I think it's likely that you have captured a picture of either a Northen or Midland Water Snake. It's hard to tell by the picture but by your description and location of the snake, it's likely that it is one of the two. These are non-poisonous and are the most common water snakes in the state. s/Nick Roy Adair County Extension Agent for Agriculture & Natural Resources Thanks. This is a different identification from what Alan Reed believes the snake to be. It's good to know that both of you think it is non-poisonous. The long stripe toward the ventral area made me think that it was likely a queen snake. It looked to be a baby, to us, and certainly would have been if it were a Northern or Midland Water Snake, both of which grow to be quite large. In any case, thanks for the identification and for adding to interest in the Green River Biosphere.-EW UPDATE from Nick Roy October 13, 2008: "Ed, Alan is right, I didn't notice the white stripe. Thanks. -Nick Roy Thanks, Nick Roy. However, I do think your ID was very important, because the snakes you mention are ones often misidentified as copperheads, especially with their adult coloration. -EW 2008-10-13 00:53:50 | Comments | Printable version
