Letter: More on being the mother of a Marine in Iraq

The following essay is written in response to Ms. Pam Kermeen's letter which so dramatically spoke of the roller coaster ride mothers of soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan feel.
"I am so thankful that the people of Adair County take the time to honor those who are from us - who serve for us." -MELISSA TAYLOR

By Melissa Taylor

I agree wholeheartedly with Ms. Kermeen's assessment of how emotional it can be having a child serving in the military.

I have always considered myself patriotic, and I have been honored to know that my father and uncles, and many friends have served our country. But not until my own son became a U.S. Marine did I fully understand the deep sacrifices that these young men and women make. The courage that they exhibit on a daily basis, to my mind, is unrivaled.

Letter: Few understand pride at military graduation ceremony

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Emotions!

The average American has no idea the pride you feel at a military graduation ceremony.

Then comes the emotional roller coaster you climb as the deployment date approaches. It's hard to put into words what you feel as you watch your only son board that bus.

GIGO Diary, for 2008-03-09: Recycling system is simple

If you want to buy fancier equipment, okay. But it's not necessary to spend anything. To get started recycling, it takes just three things, and almost no "equipment." When you do get set up, the smallest container you'll need is a trash can for waste going to landfill. And that, for most homes, shouldn't fill up every day.
By Barbara Armitage

GIGO Diary of a Recycler: Everyday we are going to follow my garbage to see just how close I can come to eliminating my contribution the landfills in America Today is Sunday March 9, 2008. Posted 2008-03-10

I don't want to be accused of being sexist but I believe that women contribute more to garbage than men do. Most garbage is a byproduct of one of two things, shopping or cooking.
