Letter: Wonders if our Grover same one named as beneficiary LETTERS & FEEDBACK To ColumbiaMagazine.com In reviewing the US Navy service record for my grandfather, Robert M. Barker, who died in 1956, I saw the name Grover Cleveland Gilpin listed as his benficiary of veteran's insurance at his inlistment in 1912. Could this have been Mr. Gilpin or, perhaps, his father? My grandfather was an orphan with no known relatives until he married. He was born in Cheney, WA and entered the Navy in Omaha, NE. Just curious. s/Stephanie Lunt Thanks. So far as we know, there is only one Grover Cleveland Gilpin, and he lives here in Columbia. Perhaps a reader will know, or we'll get the information directly from Mr. Gilpin himself. Jeffery Keltner: Adair Countians are right about FDR Jeffery Keltner says "Was FDR at Abe's Birthplace? He was, Adair Countians remember" is very true. He heard his grandfather, Rollin Keltner, who was there, tell the story over and over. And he adds a special Adair County connection to Abraham Lincoln, who dated an Adair County Keltner--after these Keltners had emigrated to Illinois By Jeffery Keltner I remember so vividly my Grandpa Rollin Keltner telling me this story over and over. I can remember George Keltner telling this story even down to the Coke bottles full of water for 5 cents filling them up at the spring on the old farm. I have walked the Lincoln Birthplace park many times with my Grandpa, listening to him reminisce about this visit, pointing out who was where and what was going on back then during that time of this event. This story is very true! Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2008-02-07 11:10:42 | Comments | Printable version

Was FDR at Abe's Birthplace? He was, Adair Countians remember Being close enough to FDR to reach over and touch his arm when he was at Lincoln's Birthplace was a favorite story of my father, the late E.P. Waggener. The story is corroborated by George Keltner and Sam Pelly. And if they were here today, it would be backed up by Hollis, Gilbert and Rollin Keltner, and Johnny Hutchison. They were all witnesses. But LaRue Countians say it never happened, George Keltner says. President Bush is to be there next Tuesday, February 12, 2008. We hope the locals there do a better job of chronicling, this time. By Ed Waggener George Keltner remembers a trip in Hollis Keltner's new truck, to Lincoln's birthplace just south of Hodgenville, KY, to be on hand for a presidential visit by Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was just a little fellow, but he got to go along for the ride. The entourage included Gilbert and Rollin Keltner, Johnny Hutchison, and Sam Pelly. "The truck had a cattle rack on it," Sam Pelly remembers. "That made it safer for some of us to ride back there." Info needed on Cedar Holler settlement in Metcalfe Co., KY LETTERS Author wants details for a planned book To ColumbiaMagazine.com A retired teacher from Louisville has contacted the Metcalfe County chamber office seeking information on a community known as Cedar Hollow ( perhaps Holler) established in Metcalfe County in the late 1960's or early 70's. He has found several references to this community, I assume online, and needs further information for a book he is writing. He hesitated to use the word "hippy" to describe the community or commune, but it was of the type that was prevalent in that era. Does anyone remember this or have any information concerning Cedar Hollow?
