Commentary: It's time to develop all of Kentucky to its potential

In response to Courier Journal's December 17, 2007,
3-1/2 pages of trashing Interstate 66 and Kentucky as a whole

By Ralph Waggener
President, South Central Printing, Inc., Columbia, KY

The first time I ever heard of the "Road to Nowhere" was when Happy Chandler, running for Governor in 1953, called Governor Lawrence Wetherby's proposed Kentucky Turnpike from Louisville to E-town, the "Road that starts nowhere and ends nowhere." Today, what was the Kentucky Turnpike is now part of I-65, one of the busiest roads in Kentucky. Despite the lesson they could have learned from Happy's hype, "Road to Nowhere" is what The Courier-Journal is calling Interstate 66 now.

I had forgotten that Interstate 65, from Louisville to E-town, was first a toll road before becoming part of Interstate 65. My good friend, Mayor Pat Bell, reminded me of this. The story in the The Courier-Journal, by C.R. Dunlap, is a self-serving one.

The state's top environmental education official will lead the nonprofit organization Eastern Kentucky PRIDE in 2008. PRIDE announced today that Jane Eller, who is the Executive Director of the Kentucky Environmental Education Council, now serves as the PRIDE Board of Directors Chairwoman, a volunteer position.

"Jane's selection as the PRIDE Chairwoman reflects the importance that we place on environmental education, both in schools and the community," U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers (KY-5) said. Rep. Rogers founded PRIDE in 1997. Rogers continued, "After a very successful decade of cleaning up the environment of southern and eastern Kentucky, the PRIDE Board of Directors will put more resources into environmental education in 2008. That is the key to securing our progress in restoring this region's natural beauty. I have great confidence in the board members and appreciate their service."

Letter: Photographer took Angel in 76 Falls as a sign

    Letters and Feedback to ColumbiaMagazine.com
Response to letter from Billy Joe Fudge

    To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I do not know if the Angel can be seen at all times or just certain times. I had never been there before and have not been back. I think it was a sign from the Lord that everything would be all right with me. At the time I had cancer and have since been healed. To me it is a wonderful blessing that I wish everyone could see. I pray that it does touch each person that sees it. Once again thanks for posting it.
