Feedback, re: Store at Red Fox, more suspicious characters

ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Hunter Durham's account of encountering suspicion of his suit and tie at a countrystore at Red Fox brought to mind once in the mid-1970's when I was guiding my DeputyCommissioner on a tour of coal mines in eastern Kentucky. The gentleman was a rotund, antebellum fellow from western Kentucky.

Moores Store : A 49 year old, one-time institution, is gone

2006-11-23 - West Page ST & Campbellsville RD, Columbia, KY - Photo Ed Waggener.
EVEN THIS IS GONE NOW Not much of what is seen in the photo taken Wednesday evening, November 22, 2006, above, is left today on the site of what was Moore's Store, an institution in the Russell Heights area for years. Today the slightly less than one-half acre lot is nearly clear, after four days work by Jeff Hatcher, the contractor in charge of razing the building. Thomas and Tootie Moore built the store in 1957. Mrs. Moore died in 1980. The store was closed after Thomas Moore's death in 1997. Thousands will remember the cold drinks, Snickers bars, and great fresh-cut sandwiches the Moores sold, when the store was as much a center of the community as the mission church. Sharon Feese, one of the heirs - along with Sandy Wilkinson, Melissa Carter, Karen Page, and Darren Moore - said that the lot will likely be auctioned soon. Watch of one of her photos of the store in its glory days.

Feedback. re: Rev Joey N Welsh, Joe Creason's Thanksgiving

ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Once I was in Red Fox in Eastern Kentucky and tried to eat lunch at alittle off the road store.

I had on a suit and tie and they were very careful about tax or gov't people.

They said they had no food left. I saw a gourd on the wall and I said"I know that is a dipper gourd, and the other is a bushel gourd." Icarry a Russel Barlow knife which i showed them, and I said. "I knowhow to whittle." She said, "We have three meats. . ." I had a reallygood meal.

Letter: Jason Harmon sends Thanksgiving note

Ed,

Our family is doing well. I will try to be down in Columbia in January orFebruary. We may stop by the Waggener homestead to say howdy, if that is okwith you and the Mrs.

I hope you and Linda have a great thanksgiving. Remember to say the blessingbefore you eat all that great food. One time after church in Edinburgh, ourfamily stopped at Little Champ convenient store to get some sandwiches thatwe were going to eat in the car. My dad asked my grandpa if he would blessthe food. Grandpa responded with, "In a minute Cliff, my mouth is full".

Jason Harmon
You're always welcome. Thanks for the Thanksgiving advice -Ed

BOOK REVIEW: THE RESURRECTION MAN
"He listened to the old people's stories, of how the trickster rabbit smiled and smiled his way out of danger, and how the fox never saw the trap for the smile, and he reckoned he could do that. He could smile like honey on a johnny cake. Serenity was his shield."
