Rev. Joey N. Welsh. Oct. 22, 2006: Persistence

ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor
By the Rev. Joey N. Welsh
E-Mail: joey_n_welsh@hotmail.com
A CENTENARY CELEBRATION OF PERSISTENCE

In the Bible the concept of persistence is a double-edged blade; it can slice either toward the very positive or the very negative aspects of faith and behavior. In his farewell speech Samuel, Old Testament prophet and leader, imparted advice to all of Israel (I Samuel 12:24-25), But be sure to fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you. Yet if you persist in doing evil, both you and your king will be swept away." (NIV)

TODAY, Sunday, October 22, 2006 in Adair County, KY

Sunday morning. Check events for complete details on what's happening today. If you haven't decided where to attend church today, the listings in Directory of Churches may help. The directory is expanded, with more links to churches with websites. It's revival and homecoming time at many churches. Several photos accompany this feature
Adv: Today's Events are brought to you by HUDDLE HOUSE, across KY 210 from Wal-Mart, Campbellsville, KY. Join us Sunday and everyday for a great food. Breakfasts are served 24/7/365, along with the mouth-watering lunch and dinner entrees. Eat with home folks. You never know who you'll run into from Adair County at the HUDDLE HOUSE. Traffic and parking. Enjoy Downtown Columbia and the shops in the Well Walk Quadrant of the Square this weekend. There's no court today, no school traffic through town. Town will be a good place to park your car, turn off the engine, and just watch the traffic go by, the way folks used to do in Columbia, for better entertainment than they can get today on satellite. To check future Adair County Court docket, click on Kentucky Court of Justice
or Go to Quick Links.

Fall color: Many of the trees are at a wonderful peak of color. Early morning colors are dazzling. A red maple on Burkesville ST, south of the Tutt ST intersection, is blood red right now, and is brigher than Christmas lights, viewed throughout the daylight from the other side of the sun.

A drive on down KY 61 to Flatwoods, Sparksville, Toria, and Breeding in the late evening is a fall paradise, with backlit trees at every turn. If you go to the Tabernacle Christian Church reunion, you're in for a big treat, especially if you take shortcuts through LIttle Cake or Neat Hollow Road, and take the time to see the spectular fall scenes at Pellyton/Ellistown and Barnett's Creek/Caldwell Ridge and Dunbar Hill above Knifley.

Maybe, along the way, someone will share a taste an Adair County pear with you, as Joe Russell Barbee did for Russell Holmes and me yesterday as we waited for the Lindsey Wilson Homecoming Parade to pass by our personal reviewing stand in the old First Realty Real Estate lot. Homegrown. Bettern any in the store. Not enough of the pear trees are maintained anymore; but the shared ones to evoke intense memories of other days, when Miss Hattie Eubank's pear tree supplied Jamestown Hill kids, at about the same spot as the Franklin Nissan sign is today.

Contributing local arts critic Edwin Taylor gives a thumbs up to the Dream Depot, which he says is another of Columbia's best kept secrets. He got a front row seat to see Machismo last night. "We go to Barn Lot Theater (Edmonton), a lot. It's great, but the Dream Depot may be better," he said. The Machismo performance was outstanding, Councillor Taylor said. The performance was the second sell-out in a row for the ensemble.

Sunday, October 22, 2006 Election Countdown: The fall election is just 16 days away, from today. This past Friday, October 20, 2006, the Republicans had a big rally, with some 250 people packing the VFW Hall to hear House Minority Leader Jeff Hoover fire up the party faithful. And last night, Breeding Volunteer Fire Department held Adair County's equivalent of Fancy Farm, with stump speakings by candidates for county offices and judge candidates, Absentee voters can vote by machine in the County Court Clerk's office, weekdays. You've got less than one week, until 4:00pm CT, Wednesday, October 27, 2006, to file a declaration of intent as a write-in candidate (not less than 10 days before election). To check other election dates, call or visit the office of Adair County Court Clerk Ann Melton in the Adair County Annex building, or to see the election calendar online, Click Here
