Postcards from LWC: Maya Caon

2021-02-08 - Venice, Italy - Photo courtesy Maya Caon.
By Dakota Smith

ISP would like to introduce Maya Caon. Maya is from Italy, and she said the hardest adjustment she had to make when moving to America was the time difference and transitioning to American culture. When asked why she chose LWC, she said she really loves her track coach, classes, and she was grateful for her scholarship. Maya has visited many different countries, and she said she loves to discover the different traditions and cultures, but her favorite country she has visited is the Dominican Republic because everyone is always happy and nice and makes sure that everyone is having fun.

Her favorite tradition in her country is the Venice Carnival shown on the left picture. Maya's mother made these costumes herself and they are shown worn by Maya, her mother, and her father. The Venice Carnival is an annual festival that ends with the Christian celebration of Lent, forty days before Easter. This year's celebration is currently taking place as it started February 6 and will end February 16. The carnival is known for its array of unique and beautiful masks.
