Laura and Carolyn Gupton were at the Adair Book Fair from Ireland

2018-10-07 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, columbiamagazine.com.
Laura Gupton and her Mama, Carolyn, were at the Annual Book Fair in Columbia Saturday, October 6, 2018. In the background is their friend Thomas Gentry. They traveled all the way from Ireland -- ok, the community in Taylor County, KY named Ireland, maybe also called Burdick. Carolyn is a member of the Adair County Genealogical Society. She remembered when Ed Waggener wrote in 2013 about Carolyn saying, "We could have joined Taylor, Green, or even Casey with our family backgrounds, but we chose Adair County because of our Beards." He wrote that they had fun tracing family trees. On one branch, they go back to William the Conqueror. In another, to a distant maternal ancestor who came to America as an indenture servant, and they've become very involved in researching her story. Laura said that many people don't realize it today, but "identured servant" was a euphenism for "slave." They often lived in cruel, horrible conditions," she said." - LW
